EXCLUSIVE: State Rep. Peggy Bennett, who was running for Minnesota governor, has released a statement to Alpha News saying she did not file to run for governor because her lieutenant governor running mate "changed his mind" hours before the 5:00pm filing deadline on Tuesday.

"Without a lieutenant governor candidate to file with me, and with no time to contact anyone else, my campaign was essentially shut down at 5PM on Tuesday," Bennett said in her statement.

Bennett said her running mate "had been a willing partner" and was "waiting in the wings to be announced."

In a phone call with Alpha News, Bennett confirmed that her running mate pick was State Rep. Elliott Engen. Bennett said she is not "out to bash" Engen, she said she is just "being truthful about what happened."

Bennett said she was shocked that Engen withdrew that "late in the game" and it essentially left her with no options and she was unable to file for governor.

According to Bennett's statement, Engen told Bennett he had other potential options in a different state. Engen filed to run for his seat in the Minnesota House on Tuesday.

Bennett said her campaign ended "not by my choice" and she is "dumbfounded to say the least."

"I might be brokenhearted right now, but I am not broken," Bennett said in her statement. "I have been knocked down, but I will brush myself off and get up. God is good and life goes on."
