Have you heard of a planned denial?
I hadn’t, until an insurance peer reviewer said it out loud during a call. Apparently, some insurance companies already know they’re going to deny a procedure before they even hear from the doctor. The peer-to-peer? Just going through the motions.
It’s a term I suspect is used internally—but rarely shared with patients or physicians. And once you hear it, you can’t unhear it.
This isn’t how care should work. We need to start calling it what it is.
