We promised to never forget.

History books will record what happened on September 11, 2001. But they can’t capture the phone calls, the waiting, the fear, the instinct to help, or the moments that have stayed with Americans for 25 years.

An entire generation has no memory of that day. Let’s make sure they understand why we still remember.

Every year on September 11th, FDNY members gather at firehouses and EMS stations across New York City to stand together in remembrance and reflection. They honor the 343 members killed on 9/11 and all those who have since died of World Trade Center-related illnesses.

Our members will stand in remembrance on Friday as we mark 25 years. We will Never Forget.

Un anno fa veniva ucciso Charlie Kirk. Aveva appena 31 anni ed era, ancora una volta, in mezzo ai giovani, in un’università, a fare quello che aveva scelto di fare per tutta la sua vita pubblica: confrontarsi, discutere, difendere le proprie idee.

Charlie aveva fatto della fede, della libertà di parola e del confronto la propria cifra. Era un cristiano convinto, un marito, un padre, un ragazzo capace di parlare a una generazione intera senza sottrarsi mai al dibattito, anche con chi la pensava in modo opposto.

È stato assassinato proprio mentre esercitava quella libertà.

A un anno di distanza, il modo migliore per ricordarlo è non lasciare che prevalga l’odio che ha cercato di zittirlo. Continuare a credere che le idee si affrontano con altre idee, che il dissenso non è un nemico da eliminare e che la fede può essere vissuta senza paura e senza vergogna.

Charlie Kirk non c’è più. Ma ciò per cui ha vissuto continua a parlare.
E merita di essere ricordato.

A quarter of a century later, the story of September 11, 2001, continues.

Presented by FDNY Pro Films, "Resilience" tells the stories of FDNY members who responded that day, survived, and then spent years searching and caring for their brothers and the thousands who were lost. Today, many continue to face the lasting health impacts of their service and sacrifice.

Through their stories and those of their loved ones, doctors and advocates, "Resilience" reveals the ongoing fight for care, recognition and support for those living with World Trade Center-related illness.

But above all, it tells a story of hope and the courage to keep moving forward.

On September 11, 2001, FDNY members from Ladder Company 6 were helping Josephine Harris down Stairwell B in the North Tower when the building collapsed around them. Trapped beneath the rubble for hours, Josephine, six firefighters and a Port Authority police officer survived.

What began as a rescue that day became a lifelong bond. Josephine remained close with the members of Ladder 6 until she died in 2011. The same firefighters carried her one last time as pallbearers at her funeral.

On Tuesday, Josephine's family returned the green firehouse jacket she was given from Ladder 6 members following 9/11. Four of the six members who helped rescue Josephine 25 years ago were there to accept the jacket.

Now, it will remain as a permanent reminder of a life saved, a bond shared, and the promise to Never Forget.
