Hello to the United Kingdom! I aim to tickle you severally this late October with a 5-city tour, called FULMINATIONS with Nick Offerman. The evening will feature songs, mirth, lessons in comportment, Cumberland sausage-talk and other euphemisms. We will also be featuring my new book LITTLE WOODCHUCKS, a thinly veiled screed urging us all to make things out of wood with our kids and our communities, with vigorous personal eye contact, lest we allow the billionaires to curate our every footstool. This show is heavy on affection.

Something I just realized why AI, in my case I use Grok, is so good. When you ask it a question it gets to the heart of the matter right away. You no longer have to wade through a blog full of annoying ads just to get to the answer you want.
Here's the NYTimes with the "latest" from the American Heart Association (AHA)
Advising food > drugs is always a good idea, so that's good.
However, lowering LDL-C via diet has been shown in clinical trials to have little-to-no effect on longer-term 'hard outcomes' incl. cardiovascular events, cardiovascular mortality or total mortality. This fact has been found in ~2 dozen systematic reviews. So lowering LDL-C w/ diet is not effective for reducing the events that matter--heart attacks and death.
The Times then recommends the "Portfolio Diet," which seems to be a rebranding of the National Cholesterol Education Program diets along with some culling of clinical trials using the word "portfolio" to describe a selection of foods. The principal study to support the "Portfolio Diet" (published in an AHA journal cited by the Times is on data from Harvard's epidemiological studies, which can only show association, not a cause-and-effect relationship. And again, the outcome measured is LDL-C, which is not linked in diet trials to hard outcomes such as heart attacks and death.
To raise your "good" HDL-C, the Times again cites AHA advice, to exercise. Although a far more efficient way to raise your HDL-C is to eat saturated fat.
The pharma-and-food funded AHA has been giving out misguided (wrong) advice to the public on heart disease since 1961, when it told Americans to swap out saturated fats for seed oils (for decades prior, it had been funded by Procter & Gamble, maker of Crisco Oil--and when I last checked, it still was). The @nytimeswell might consider some critical reporting on this group.

If homebuyer demand is so weak, why aren’t home prices falling?
Everyone knows that potential homebuyers are waiting for better affordability. But if demand for homes at these prices has fallen, why haven’t home prices fallen to meet demand?
The short answer is that while demand is low, new supply remains very low too. For home prices to adjust significantly, we need an imbalance with supply vs. demand, and this market is surprisingly balanced.
That’s what we’re tackling in this week’s @altosresearch housing market data video.
Here are the highlights for the week of October 23, 2023. [video link follows below]
📍 554,000 single family homes on the market. That’s up 1.5% from last week.
📍 Inventory is growing faster than last year at this time.
📍 There were only 57,000 new listings (single family homes) unsold again this week. There are fewer sellers now than any recent year.
📍The supply side of the equation shows no signs of easing.
📍 325,000 single family homes in the contract pending stage. 6% fewer sales than last year.
📍 55,000 new contracts for single family homes this week. That’s 1,000 more sales than the same week last year.
📍 Homebuyer demand is historically weak, but we don’t measure any precipitous further drop in demand even with mortgage rates over 8%.
📍 38.5% of the homes on the market have taken a price reduction. Still increasing.
📍Price cuts show the balanced market is tilting slowly to supply.
📍 The median price of single family homes in the US is $435,000.
📍 Even though the demand indicators are weak and even weakening a bit, home prices have stayed reasonably stable, especially when compared to last year.
📍 Home price gains of 1-2% over last year.
📍 Median price of single family homes going into contract each week is ticking lower, this is mostly seasonal.
Op-ed by @drmarkhyman:
We need an "Alternative Dietary Guidelines" for people with obesity and other chronic diseases.
Current guidelines are designed only for the healthy--now a small minority of Americans.
The solution? Follow the links in the article, and you'll see he's talking about a low-carb/keto diet as the most effective for combatting these diseases.

@nutrition_facts Stetfield revised his own report as being very misleading and incorrect by a factor of 300%.
Meanwhile activists and policies against livestock are dooming over 820 million people to suffer from nutrient deficiencies.
