@WokePreacherTV Converge let this guy speak at their conference last week. I'd never heard of him before. It took about five minutes for me to figure out he is a complete racist.
@therealstandage@ryanswalters73 As long as you stick to the Jesus of the New Testament, you will never go wrong. It is the Jesus of Joseph Smith that I take exception to. The "Jesus" who is spirit brother with Satan, who was not always God, who came to America and preached to places that never existed.
@StStymie I'm sorry Smith was murdered by an angry mob. Shouldn't have happened. That being said, everything I've seen reveals he was a deeply manipulative and immoral man. Classic false prophet. I beg you to give him a long, sober look since you are trusting his teachings with your soul.
@StStymie Alright, fine:
Joseph Smith taught the plurality of gods primarily in his Sermon in the Grove (also called the Sermon on the Plurality of Gods) delivered on June 16, 1844, in Nauvoo, Illinois, east of the temple.
Shall we move on to Smith's failed prophecies?
@StStymie He's your guy. If I've misunderstood him, tell me. From everything I've read about Smith, he taught the Trinity is three separate gods, that the Father was once a man, and that men can become gods. Is this what you believe?
@TheGermanicist I know you believe that, but you are not getting this idea from the Bible. You are getting it from Mormon scriptures, which are all reliant on Joseph Smith or later Mormon prophets.
@StStymie You guys are slipping from the super nice guy facade with the insults and obscenities, but I appreciate the authenticity.
Let's look at the listed objections one at a time:
Did Smith teach a plurality of gods?
I'm convinced he did. Do you disagree?
@TheGermanicist Why are you quoting the D&C to make points about the Bible? You don't get these teachings from the Bible itself. You have to read them into the Bible. When you accuse "creedal Christians" of just following their traditional readings, you are accusing them of doing exactly this.
@TheGermanicist “I said, “You are gods, sons of the Most High, all of you; nevertheless, like men you shall die, and fall like any prince.””
Psalm 82:6-7
The context makes it clear the “gods” in this psalm are nothing like the one true God. They die like mortal men, not live forever.
@TheGermanicist Lets go through each of these. How does Romans 8:27 teach men become gods?
“And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”
@TheGermanicist On the car ride home, the friend who invited me explained Mormons believed they can become gods. I’d been to enough church services to know that was wildly different than what other denominations taught.
@OhThats_Good@IronRodWarrior He failed the prophet test because he taught a plurality of gods and falsely predicted the building of a temple in Independence, MO.
He failed the church leader test because he took many wives, was domineering over people, and taught a different gospel.
@TheGermanicist I used to be an atheist before I became a Christian. I went to a Mormon youth group event at that time while wearing a blasphemous t-shirt from a heavy metal band that said “Godlike” on the back. I was worried it would offend people. Instead, the Mormons liked it.
@therealstandage@ryanswalters73 I had a born again experience during a Catholic mass when I was 19. I have objections to things like papal infallibility and marian devotion, but the RC church was the first Christian church and still has many true Christians. Mormonism believes in a different Jesus, though.
@TheGermanicist I agree that your prophet should not have been murdered, preferring a proper judicial process, and for that, you call me a Satan inspired murderer. So much for the "nice" Mormon stereotype.
