THE BEGINNING OF WESTERN RAILWAY
On this day, 170 years ago, the Bombay, Baroda & Central India Railway Company was incorporated by an Act of the British Parliament to connect the port of Mumbai to the cotton-growing districts of Gujarat and Central India. Construction of the line from Surat to Ahmedabad and Baroda began in May 1856. Mumbai was connected in November 1864. It became Western Railway in November 1951.
