'THE VP IS NOT CONSIDERED RELEVANT'

Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin explained the rationale behind Executive Order (EO) 81, series of 2024, which reorganizes and streamlines the membership of the National Security Council (NSC).

"EO 81, s. 2024 is issued to reorganize and streamline the membership of the NSC," Bersamin said in a statement on Friday, January 3.

He stated that the Vice President is currently "not considered relevant to the responsibilities of membership in the NSC." However, he emphasized that the executive order allows flexibility for future adjustments.

"Nonetheless, when the need arises, the EO reserves to the President the power to add members or advisers," Bersamin added.

EO 81, signed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on December 30, 2024, removes the Vice President and former Philippine presidents from the NSC and its executive committee. It also authorizes the President to appoint or designate other government officials and private citizens as members.
