I don't care about high-speed rail.

Let's take the already-extant rail system and give passenger trains right of way instead. And let's expand the service to include all top-100 American cities.

Add in some labor reforms like annual "travel days off" to allow average workers to take the time to use the new-and-improved Amtrak system and we'd be all set.

A nation of romantics, riding the rails, sipping lager on a comfortable, on-time, normal-speed train.

Speeding across the mind-bending scenery of this country in a "bullet train" is some type of weird, materialist, reductive thing. It's not American.
