@Michell62614519 @fuggabugga@Wikipedia When choosing compounds to study in any ALS model, it is critical to identify compounds that simultaneously address the most pathways involved in the disease as possible. Unfortunately, many of the substances chosen for clinical trial are a joke...many are too one-dimensional.
@Michell62614519 @fuggabugga@Wikipedia The problem with substances that are limited to Nrf2, primarily antioxidants that don’t modulate REDOX or provide other anti-cancer protection, is that Nrf2 can be cancer-hyjacked; its important because mitochondrial-related ALS genes are cancer genes too, including SOD1 & 2
@fuggabugga@Wikipedia Thank you. Great points. Manganese (and probably iron) is very important for the SOD2 enzyme & copper/zinc for the SOD1 enzyme. The difference between the 2 enzymes (almost identical) is the metal ions you mention. Also, SOD2 resides inside the mitochondria. SOD1 on outside.
@Michell62614519 @fuggabugga@Wikipedia Do you have a source for that graph? I think it’s just a graph that captures what genes can fit.
It is not only in the US medical literature (I tweeted you a direct link to GOV site), it’s a diagnosable mitochondrial disease with overlapping degenerative presentations (MND also).
@elisagiaquinto1 Great Tweeting, Dr. Giaquinto & I like your glasses. Still looking so youthful!
Can you please email me at [email protected]? I have an upcoming deadline and I need your help.
In honor of #InternationalDanceDay and weekend dance celebrations, I share a mixed media #painting called, “The Artist is a Dancer: art is a lofty calling” by Angeline Pacy circa 1996.
Life is a great sculptural masterpiece. We can not always choose our medium, but we can work it and rework it over and over with great attitude. As I cleaned last week, I decided to turn it into an art, a prayer & exercise. This quote (below) inspires me today.
@Michell62614519 @fuggabugga@Wikipedia Despite this, research into mitigation of neurodegeneration (with REDOX / antioxidants) is immensely promising for patients impacted by the SOD2 allele (and other alleles will follow suit if “non-profits“ would vest research funds in not-highly-profitable but effective products)
@Michell62614519 @fuggabugga@Wikipedia As an FYI, SOD2 knockout models were so aggressive in neurodegenerative disease (dying before birth or shortly after), that they became unattractive research models for pharmaceutical corporations and their subsidiaries (including “non-profits). Therefore, it is not widely used.
