Today, on the birthday of our great country, I am reminded of my immigrant father. He was a proud Italian who always taught us to be grateful for the opportunities America gave our family. His love for his heritage was matched only by his love for this nation.

I recently submitted applications for Columbus Circle and the statue in Astoria to the Landmark Preservation Commission for Landmark status. I received notice confirming my applications. Let’s hope we can be successful by the end of this year or sooner.

It was a honor to kiss Pope Francis’s hand when he visited the residence of the Nuncio in NYC in 2015. Serving the saintly Pope for 3 days was a privilege that I will never forget. May he Rest in Peace.

I had the privilege of seeing the incredibly talented Il Volo at Radio City. Gianluca, Ignacio and Piero who are as humble and gracious as they are super talented! Spectacular show! I look forward to their next tour in the U.S.

Lou Carnesecca is an Italian American icon was more than a great basketball coach. He was an outstanding human being and role model for all. A man of compassion, honor, respect, love of family and country who inspired everyone.  My most sincere condolences to his family. RIP.
