Muhammad Ali on why he refused to be drafted to fight the Viet Cong in the US’ imperial war on Vietnam🇻🇳:
‘I’m not gonna help nobody get something my negroes don’t have, if I’m gonna die I’ll die right here fighting you. You my enemy, my enemy is the white people, not Viet Congs, or Chinese, or Japanese.
You my opposer when I want freedom. You my opposer when I want justice. You my opposer when I want equality. You won’t even stand up for me here in America for my religious beliefs, and you want me to go somewhere and fight when you won’t even stand up for me here at home.’
He was twelve.
On September 30, 2000, Mohamed al-Durrah was killed while hiding behind his father, Jamal, with nowhere to run. He did not choose to be a symbol he chose safety. The bullets didn’t stop.
The world watched, remembered, argued, and then moved on. But his image remains. A reminder that this tragedy is never abstract it always ends with a child who never made it home.
"Here, I am not a Negro but a human being for the first time in my life…I walk in full human dignity."
-Paul Robeson on his visit to the Soviet Union in 1934. The legendary concert bass baritone, actor, and civil rights activist died on this day in 1976.
His journey to Marxist-Leninism started after his experience proved that the American Dream was a lie. He was a top student at Rutgers University, an All-American athlete, a Columbia educated lawyer, and a world famous singer and actor…
And yet he still faced racism and employment discrimination, with white law firms refusing to hire him.
His visit to the Soviet Union made him feel like a ‘full human being’ for the first time, experiencing equality that he had not experienced in the USA. The Spanish republic’s fight against Franco’s fascist armies solidified his support for the communists, who fought valiantly to stop the rise of fascism.
At home in the USA, he was persecuted in the McCarthyite hysteria, having his passport revoked, concerts cancelled, income cut off, and being under constant state surveillance.
Paul Robeson’s experience proved that America’s ‘freedom’ only applied if you stayed within the acceptable confines of debate, and did not challenge the system of elite power.
England has a choice:
More of the same, Tory-lite or Tory-recycled
Same wealthy elite working the rest of us to our graves
Same politicians getting rich from their public office.
Or try something different:
Community first…
People first…
A govt that governs for us all
Breaking News: A general strike is happening in Minnesota today!
People are refusing to go to work.
Schools & businesses are closed.
The Demands: ICE must leave Minnesota, Congress must abolish ICE, and Renee Good’s killer must be arrested.
This is what solidarity looks like!
It took Greenland not Gaza for Mark Carney to call time on the international rules based order. This is a fundamentally racist equation, as I explain in my new column for Middle East Eye:
https://t.co/NMEgo4J6KS
The EU ignores US / Israeli War Crimes in Palestine, Venezuela, Iran, Yemen, Lebanon Nigeria, Somalia and then gets all righteous about Greenland... Meanwhile they continue to support the Israeli Genocide in Palestine. They're worse than Hypocrites....
#InterPisa ...
Zack Polanski will not forget Gaza🇵🇸
