Good news: Keisha Lance Bottoms is taking her campaign directly to Southeast Georgia with a Health Care Tour through Statesboro, Jesup, Woodbine, Brunswick, Richmond Hill, and Savannah.

This dovetails with something I’ve been saying for a long time: Democrats cannot afford to write off rural Georgia.

That does not mean pretending every deeply Republican county will turn blue overnight. It means showing up, listening without condescension, supporting the Democrats who already live there, persuading voters who are open to hearing us, and reducing Republican margins. Statewide elections are won through margins everywhere.

Health care is an especially important issue in rural communities. Hospital closures, provider shortages, maternal care, veterans’ care, insurance costs, and long drives for treatment affect people regardless of party. Your ZIP code should not determine whether you can see a doctor or keep your local hospital open.

When Democrats fail to show up, Republican messaging becomes the only political message many voters hear. We should be talking with people about their hospitals, schools, roads, farms, utility bills, jobs, and whether anyone in Atlanta is paying attention to them.

I’m especially glad to see Statesboro included, where my youngest brother attends Georgia Southern, and I’m excited that the tour will conclude in Savannah at the Georgia Democratic Convention, where I’ll be serving as a delegate.

This is what a real statewide campaign should look like: compete everywhere, listen everywhere, and make Republicans earn every vote.
