St. MARK OF ATHENS. 

Saint Mark was born in the 4th century in Athens. Of his 130 years of life, he spent 95 in the desert. At a young age, the future ascetic received an education; after the death of his parents, he moved to Africa and settled in a cave on Mount Trache (near the border of Egypt and Ethiopia/Libya). From then on, only before his death did he see a human again. It was the father Serapion, sent to him by the providence of God, who recorded the life of the saint from his own words. 

For the first 30 years in the desert, St. Mark suffered greatly from hunger, summer sweat, and winter cold. He fed on rare desert plants; sometimes he had to eat dust and drink seawater. After this long period of trials, divine grace descended upon Mark. From then on, the Lord began to send his servant an angel who brought him food, and also gave the ascetic an abundant covering of hair to protect his body from cold and heat. 

During a conversation with Father Serapion, Saint Mark asked: "Are there saints among the world now working miracles, as the Lord said in His Gospel: 'If you have faith like a mustard seed and say to this mountain, "Move from here to there," and it will move,' and nothing will be impossible for you" (Mt. 17:20)? 

While he was saying that, the mountain rose and moved 2.5 km towards the sea. Noticing this, the reverend said to the mountain, “I did not order you to move from your place, but I was talking to my brother. Therefore, stand in your position!” The mountain obeyed. 

Seeing the horror of Father Serapion, Mark asked: "Have you not seen such miracles in your life?" — and wept: — "Woe to the earth, because Christians live on it only by name, not by deeds!" 

Father Serapion witnessed the death of St. Mark and, as he willed, buried him in a cave. This happened in the year 400."

Jay Dyer Explains the Orthodox View of Grace & Theosis

In the Orthodox view, that’s what we mean by grace. You hear Protestants or Roman Catholics talk about being saved by grace. We agree with that. But we see grace as more than just God’s disposition changing toward us from anger to love.

We see it as an ontological reality of participation.

It’s very crucial in the Orthodox view that we’re not just becoming better people or improving morally. We are actually participating in the uncreated energies, life, and love of God. That participation is what transforms us.

There’s a much stronger metaphysical and ontological emphasis in the Orthodox view, as opposed to the typical Western Protestant or Catholic framework, which often focuses more on your legal standing before God—whether you are declared righteous or guilty.

In Orthodoxy, we understand salvation as a process.
