BREAKING: Ruben Vardanyan, a political prisoner detained in Azerbaijan for over a year, has filed four legal actions through his legal team, alleging multiple human rights violations. The lawsuits, which come just ahead of the UN’s COP29 summit in Baku, include claims of defamation by the Azerbaijani state-run newspaper Baku Worker, torture during a hunger strike, and violations of his right to a speedy trial.

The defamation lawsuit accuses the newspaper of publishing false statements that damage Vardanyan’s reputation. Another case highlights the degrading treatment Vardanyan faced during his hunger strike in April 2024, where he was reportedly placed in a punishment cell, denied basic necessities, and subjected to sleep deprivation. A third action details the violation of his right to a speedy trial, as he has been held in pre-trial detention for over a year without a court date. The fourth lawsuit accuses the Azerbaijani authorities of blocking Vardanyan from filing a civil defamation claim by withholding the necessary legal documentation.

These legal actions add to growing concerns over Azerbaijan’s human rights record, particularly as the country prepares to host the COP29 summit. International human rights organizations have raised alarms about Azerbaijan’s treatment of political prisoners and its ongoing crackdown on civil society. Former Artsakh State Minister Ruben Vardanyan was arrested in September 2023 alongside other Armenian leaders following Azerbaijan’s military actions in Artsakh, with human rights groups labeling these actions as ethnic cleansing.

Today marks one year since my friend and partner, Ruben Vardanyan was forcibly and unlawfully arrested by Azerbaijan, where he remains illegally jailed in Baku with many other Armenians in a clear violation of their basic human rights. I've spent the morning reading the Freedom house-report "Why are there no Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh?" Needless to say it is not an enjoyable read.

The report documents the crimes committed by the Azerbaijani dictatorship in the region from the cease fire of the 44 day war in November of 2020 up to present day of May 2024.

Starting immediately with threats, harassment and random acts of unprovoked violence by Azerbaijani military against the civilian Armenian population. As well as threatening rhetoric from government officials. Aiming to instill a fear of what was to come when the next war would start.
Continuing with the 9 month blockade of the region, resulting in a humanitarian crisis with a shortage of food, fuel and medicine.
Culminating in September with the Azerbaijani invasion. Ending the Artsakh government och resulting in the exodus of over 100K ethnic Armeniens (+99 %) from the region.
Finally the report also notes the cultural vandalism which has taken place since then, with churches and cemeteries being destroyed. The Aliyev regime is not contempt it would seem, with only driving out the regions people, but also wish to destroy it's history, in an aim to Islamize and Turkify the area.

The report concludes that the Armenian population fleeing Nagorno-Karabakh was the result of a willfull effort by Azerbaijan, and that this meet the criteria for ethnic cleansing. And as such, Azerbajiani officials responsible for it could be persecuted in the International criminal Court. (ICC).

This report is definitely worth to read for any western politician blinded by Azerbaijani sport- och culture-events, thinking that the country in any way can be a reliable partner.

PS. As a side note, any politicians in a CSTO member state should note the utter inefficiency of the Russian peace keepers. These were either unable or unwilling to protect anyone. It's not a good idea for anyone to rely on Putin for peace and stability.

In this video of ethnically cleansed Stepanakert, you can see that the Azerbaijanis who stole Florence Garden restaurant from its Armenian owners left the Jermuk refrigerator on the patio.

Jermuk mineral water comes from the city of the same name, which AZ attacked in 2022.
