A conservation group which failed in a bid to secure protected status for an ancient herd of wild goats is raising a fresh petition to take to the Scottish Parliament.
MSPs turned down an attempt by the Wild Goat Conservation Trust (WGCT) to gain protection for the animals roaming the moors between Langholm and Newcastleton in southern Scotland earlier this year.
A fresh petition would seek to introduce legislation creating a statutory closed season for shooting wild goats alongside a targeted licensing system for "high-impact culling".
WGCT chairman David Braithwaite said herd numbers had dropped over the years which was "worrying" and they wanted to take action.
Last year MSPs rejected a petition signed by nearly 22,000 people seeking protected status.
Landowners argued that there were too many goats and culling the herd would reduce their environmental impact.
Ultimately, the petitions committee concluded it had "no choice" but to reject the protection plea after the government agency NatureScot said the goats were not eligible because they were a non-native species.
Now the WGCT is consulting until 30 June on the content of a new draft petition to take back to the Scottish Parliament.
Braithwaite said the group felt it was worth making a fresh attempt to introduce some kind of protection for the goats.
"They are quite important, people love them and they actually can - in the right circumstances - make a positive contribution to nature conservation and the ecology of certain sites," he said.
A draft petition would seek the statutory licensing of high-impact culling and the creation of a closed season for wild goats in Scotland.
The WGCT said that would "support animal welfare, sustainable population management, and accountability in wildlife management".

💔 THIS IS HEARTBREAKING. COULD DARTMOOR TRULY LOSE ITS PONIES? 🐴📉
A devastating warning has been issued by campaigners who fear that up to NINETY PERCENT of Dartmoor’s iconic semi-wild hill ponies could completely disappear from the moorland.
Over 23,000 people have already signed an emergency petition demanding action to protect them.
New rules drawn up by Natural England mean that grazing limits across the moors are being slashed. But here is the catch: campaigners say the famous ponies are being lumped into the exact same livestock quotas as commercial cattle and sheep.
Because they are competing for the same reduced space, it's feared farmers will be forced to remove the ponies to make way for more financially viable livestock.
The Dartmoor Hill Pony Association warns that numbers have already plummeted from 7,000 to just 900 in the last 25 years. They are already listed as an officially endangered native breed. Campaigners warn that once they are gone from the moor, they are gone forever.
Natural England says they want to ensure "optimal numbers" remain and that ponies are vital for restoring the landscape—but officials confirm they must be included in the total livestock count.
Dartmoor simply wouldn’t be Dartmoor without the ponies. Do you think it’s fair to treat these historic animals the same as farm livestock?

The Somerset Farmhouse of 1 North Street, Williton were approached by a "food influencer" that wanted to charge them £2,000 for a review.
They put out a video of Sally eating a sausage roll instead 😆.
Lets make Sally and the Somerset Farmhouse famous for free.
😡 ABSOLUTELY DISGRACEFUL 😡
Today at Mitchelstown Market, dogs were reportedly being offered for sale for €200 each while sitting in a crate for hours, with concerns raised that they had no access to water. Witnesses say the matter was reported to the Gardaí.
So cruel and horrible 😡😡. Animals are living, feeling beings, not products to be left suffering in cages while people walk past.
We need answers. What happened to these dogs? Were they checked on? Were any animal welfare authorities contacted?
If anyone has reliable information or an update on the welfare of these dogs, please pm us. These poor dogs deserve protection.
Enough is enough. Animal welfare must be taken seriously.

Families of the Nottingham attacks victims were praised for their "outstanding public service" in forcing the Nottingham Inquiry this morning.
A former ombudsman said pushing for change far too often fell on such families, but that we would be "a lot further back" without them.
