In 2018, UNHCR registered 800k+ Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, incl by gathering their biometrics, so gov cld issue cards to access all humanitarian services. @Refugees told media and community that data would not be shared with Myanmar for repatriations https://t.co/133JOVJC7g
What is not being done as poor countries pursue big, expensive tech projects must also be part of the calculus of their cost. Both India and Kenya pursuing digital ID initiatives while failing to provide adequate basic healthcare during a pandemic is a failure to prioritise.
Four months after the coup, #Myanmar citizens are still fighting to resist dictatorship - today in the Irrawaddy delta residents picked up catapults and crossbows to repel a military raid. At least 20 people were killed.
Among the people I met in a ration queue in Delhi was a truck mechanic who lost work because oxygen cylinders used in his garage were taken away by the police for hospital use.
Deaths in the second wave have obscured the distress of the living.

PINJRATOD:
"As Natasha Narwal walks out of prison tonight on a three week interim bail provided by the Delhi High Court, one cannot rejoice.. Justice indeed has come so late as to have been denied forever..
Release.. Undertrial prisoners Now!
Release.. Political Prisoners Now!"
I wanted to share that we had been scammed by a person who posed as a Cipla Foundation representative for #Toucilzomab. His bank account details are A/c No 446810110012495, IFSC Code: BKID0006078, Bank Name: Bank of India and A/c Holder: Cipla Foundation Ltd PLEASE DON'T USE HIM
In @scroll_in, I ask: who owns the IPR for #Covaxin? #ICMR or #BharatBiotech (BB)? Unfortunately, we do not know. If it is public funded, should not Covaxin be free for all? I find that 4 of the 6 journal papers of BB acknowledge ICMR's financial support.

So devastating. This has nothing to do with @FreeNazanin, nothing to do with who she is, nothing to do with anything she might have said or done, nothing to do with any "real" crime. This is what arbitrary looks like. This is what state sanctioned abuse looks like.
When India needed to debate what healthcare responses where going to be provided to the COVID-19, Govt forced Aarogya Setu and called it a day. A entire nation was distracted with techno solutionism, while Govt ignored healthcare responses entirely.
Fourteen states have said the vaccine will be free. More will follow. They should - it makes ethical, economic and political sense. But just realise when we all casually say 'health is a state subject', what this implies for all spending on health, and not just vaccines. (1/7).
Gates speaks as if all the lives being lost in India are inevitable but eventually the West will help when in reality the US & UK are holding their feet on the neck of developing states by refusing to break TRIPS protections. It's disgusting.

In any case, Covaxine was developed by ICMR, a govt funded body, along with Bharat Biotech. Covishield was developed by public funding in the UK. Is protecting the profits of these two private companies more important than lives of Indians? I don't get it. I just don't get it.
There is no other country where they are charging peoplee for the Covid-19 vaccine. Everywhere else it's free. Here, in the midst of the worst outbreak anywhere, a publicly funded vaccine will cost people more than a privately licensed one. This country has lost it. It is sick.
This is not an accident.
This is not something they don't know about.
These governments understand all this.
They have made this deliberate policy choice anyway.
And more of us will die because of it.
🇪🇺 Dear EU Citizens,
🇬🇧 Dear UK Citizens,
🇺🇸 Dear US Citizens,
🇦🇺 Dear Australian Citizens,
Do you want a longer pandemic?
No, of course not.
But your governments, by blocking wider production of vaccines globally, are prolonging the pandemic.

If a vaccine approved for emergency use, under a legally declared disaster, during a pandemic, doesn't fit your definition of a public good enough for you to not accept Rs 400-600 as base and differentiated pricing, then what in the world will?
We lockdown, declare disasters, yet find time for evictions of people's homes to continue. Delhi Housing Rights Taskforce condemns forced evictions at all times, but especially egregious are those during a pandemic! Press Release attached. @delhievictions#NoForcedEvictions
