The way the protests erupted at IIT Bombay deserves serious scrutiny. This is one of India’s premier institutions, and professors doing their duty by catching cheating cannot simply be portrayed as wrong.

The involvement of outsiders also raises questions about whether this was truly a spontaneous student protest or whether there was external influence.

If a German citizen and OCI cardholder was involved in mobilising the protest, her role and access to the campus should be properly investigated. Why was she there in the first place, and who allowed it?
