He, as well as others, have sung for free on occasion. "Alag Alag" was because he was Kaka's friend and yes - they hit the stratosphere of superstardom together - Charulata because it was Ray, and he revered him (he being Ruma's relative was probably just a small part of the reason - they were already divorced for about six years then). As some would know, Kishore also stepped in with financial help for Pothher Panchali (1955) when Ray ran into a fund shortage (5000 rupees, a lot those days).

Kishore and the entire team (including RD Burman, Anand Bakshi, Smita Patil etc.) did not charge a penny for Sunil Dutt's "Dard ka rishta", as the proceeds were to go towards building a cancer hospital in Nargis' memory.
