A 12-year-old boy from Khuzdar, Balochistan, arrived at NICVD in critical condition — with a bullet lodged inside his heart — after other hospitals reportedly declined to treat him.

The team at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases did not hesitate.

They performed a complex, life-saving cardiac surgery. The bullet was removed. The child is now recovering.

This is what a public-sector institution looks like when it works: skilled professionals, decisive leadership under Prof Tahir Saghir, and a paediatric cardiac surgery team led by Prof Sohail Khan Bangash that refused to give up when others could not take the risk.
In a country where we rightly criticise institutional failure, NICVD deserves recognition for proving that excellence in public healthcare is not impossible.

Well done, NICVD.
Pakistan needs more of this.
