In India there has been always a concern regarding credit gap in funding to SMEs. Therefore SME Platforms were created to address this gap by giving SMEs access to equity market. It took a lot of time to create a vibrant market and to bring investors.
The commentators in the market should always have these things in mind that this is SME Platform and not main board. This platform has been created to serve the needs of SMEs. Of course SME investment will be risky investment and thatโs why it is available to high income individuals.
I will put it like this that SMEs going on SME platforms are like people from lower middle and middle class having burning desire to become big. We have the precedence of transformation of many SMEs. However today people who are affluent when they go to see people from lower and middle class I.e SMEs staying in one or two bedrooms home they start judging them from their living standards thinking that these people will not become ever big and start giving them bad name and making very loose comments. My personal suggestion to these people that they may refrain from making loose comments. Recently it was brought to my notice that someone spoken loosely that 9 out of 10 SME IPOs are scam and subscriptions are manipulated. He must be asked what was his basis for making such statements on public forum. If he has datas to prove. Otherwise he should come out clean as these statements must not be taken lightly. This will jeopardise the credibility of the ecosystem.
Having said above my suggestions to investors that they always understand that investment in equity is always risky and therefore they should do proper research before investing.
SME Platforms must become big and continue to remain engine of growth by providing equity capital to SMEs.
