When the Chinese first entered Tibet in 1949–50, many Tibetans initially viewed them positively. They paid generously for local goods, helped farmers, and even became known for a saying that the “communist Chinese are like our parents and silver coins fall like rain.”
But by 1954–55, that perception began to change dramatically. Reports of Chinese attacks and destruction across Tibet spread, casting a shadow over everyday life and marking the beginning of a far darker chapter.

At 20, Khigulugu was arrested, handcuffed and held captive by Chinese forces. Now 83, he remembers the torture, imprisonment and indoctrination he and others endured — including being taught to turn against Tibet’s high lamas and monks.
