It’s incredibly tough to process that Sir Garry is gone. I’ve been looking back at the memories we shared over the years, from him handing me the Player of the Tournament trophy at the 2003 World Cup, to his warm words when he felicitated me for the century milestone. He was always so exceptionally gracious.
My mind keeps going back to when we caught up in London a few years ago. We were just sitting and chatting about the game, and it hits me so hard right now that it was the last time we’d ever meet.
He truly was the ‘One and Only’. Going to miss him immensely. Rest in peace, Sir Garry.
2 AM. Chennai sleeps. A phone rings.
A parent is wailing hysterically.
A child has fallen down frm the bed,& the nearest scan centre Radiologist has diagnosed a shattered kidney, referring him to the nearest Urologist.
Somewhere else in Chennai, a Urologist gets up on getting the news, puts on a white coat,& walks into a battle against time. Like Russell Crowe dons his gear in The Gladiator.
Not every battle will be won. We already know that.
Patients remember the waiting time. The delayed appointment. The occasional frown.
They don't see the doctor who skipped 2 meals, missed a child's school play, has gone through 2 nights without sleep coz of emergency surgeries,& still remembers the patient they couldn't save, years later.
Doctors aren't superheroes.
We get tired.
We forget anniversaries.
We doubt ourselves.
We grieve quietly.
And yet we come back. And back. And back.
Because every new patient deserves our very best effort- no less, no matter what yesterday cost us.
If a dr ever eased your pain, saved someone you love, or simply sat beside you when you were frightened, tell them today.
A few words of gratitude stay with us far longer than you might imagine. On Doctors' Day in India, let me say this without the slightest hyperbole- For the doctors of India, battling a super-hostile press & bureaucracy, media vultures waiting to scavenge on a fake story abt an 'errant' Dr, thoroughly underpaid & overworked, molested & assaulted by patient relatives throughout India- who think a human is immortal unless killed by a dr at a hospital,
THE ONLY EASY DAY WAS YESTERDAY.
Happy Drs' Day.
In 1997, my engineer brother developed a small lump above his collar bone. I was a young Dr then, & my father took him to his cousin, Dr. Jeyasingh Cooksley, former HOD, Stanley & personal surgeon to Dr. Kalaignar Ayya. Dr. Cooksley diagnosed him with TB Lymphadenitis & started him on ATT. I asked him whether biopsy/FNAC was necessary, but he regally waved me off.
Lumps started appearing in his neck. We took him again to the great surgeon, who diagnosed Drug-resistant TB,& put him on 2nd line ATT. Meanwhile my mother with her loving maternal instincts invited 'Alternative Med' practitioners, a euphemism for quacks to treat him.
First to appear was a 75 yr old homeopath, a retired Surgery HOD, Thanjavur Med College, who had renounced medicine & was practicing 'Homeopathy'. He stopped TB medicines, & started him on 'H' drugs. Precious time ws being lost, while the disease ws progressing at break neck speed.
Despite my vehement protests, my mother invited Ayurveds next. They started Rx with their concoctions, & the bill was heavy. No sign of improvement. She then brought in Siddha, Unani 'Drs' to treat my brother as a guinea pig. The Rx cost was enormous, precious time was being lost, & the 'disease' was travelling with a vengeance.
Tho my mother was an imposing figure in my house, & took all important household decisions, I decided to put my foot down. Enough of this nonsense.I took my brother to Apollo Cancer Hospital, to an efficient team headed by Dr. Hemanthraj & Dr. Subramaniam. In the meanwhile, when Quacks were extorting us for insane sums of money, my brother had developed apple-sized lumps in both groins, both armpits, both sides of the neck,& a giant spleen.
The great Drs at Apollo immediately proceeded with biopsy,& confirmed Stage 4 ,High grade Non- Hodkins Lymphoma, which in that era was incurable. They put him on state of the art Chemo & radiotherapy.
They told my brother & us that, had we come to them before precious time was lost to quacks( pseudoscience practitioners ), they cd have saved his life. From the detailed history that I gave them, they surmised that at the time of noticing the lump, it was Stage 1 cancer & eminently curable. As my mother went shopping from Homeopathy to Ayurveda to Siddha , the disease had travelled to Stage 4 Cancer which was incurable (in that era).
I have had a long career as a Dr,& seen many painful deaths. Without any exaggeration at all, I can say that my brother suffered the most painful death, I hv ever known. From fractures spine & loss of use of lower limbs coz of spread of cancer to spine, to pneumonia, while pseudoscience practitioners were extorting exorbitant sums of money from us, & experimenting with life & death.
It was only his immense faith in God, that sustained him till the end. He predicted the exact date & time of his death, after the Apollo Drs gave up on him, & asked us to take him home from the ICU so that he cd spend his last days & hrs at home, amidst loved ones... On 11.7.2000, he passed away. But, only after his unusual outburst I had related in my previous tweet.. THE RAGE OF ANGELS..
And that is why, I am a crusader against Pseudoscience.
Well done, Arjun. ❤️
Proud of the way you’ve carried yourself through this season, always believing in your ability, staying patient, working hard quietly, and remaining positive despite having to wait for your opportunity till the very last match.
Cricket tests patience as much as skill, and you handled both beautifully today.
Keep your feet on the ground, and continue being in love with the game like you always have.
Love you always.👏
Wars are tragic, yet they remain a reality.
Any language or action that contemplates the end of civilisation is unacceptable in the modern world.
The use of nuclear weapons can never be justified - under any circumstances.

Champions ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Phenomenal win for Team India in Ahmedabad. Absolutely no match for the explosive cricket played by us throughout the tournament. Brilliant character shown by the boys to keep fighting in tough situations and become world champions once again. Congratulations to all the players and all the members of the management for achieving this feat. Jai Hind 🇮🇳❤️
India’s foreign policy emerges from the collective will of our people.
It should be rooted in our history, our geography, and our spiritual ethos based on Satya and Ahimsa.
What we are witnessing today is not policy.
It is the result of the exploitation of a compromised individual.

Maha Ashtomi is the very soul of Durga Puja. The anjali, the dhak, the fragrance of incense together they remind us of the sanctity of courage and sacrifice.
On this day, may we imbibe the spirit of the Mother, who stood against tyranny and protected the weak. Let her blessings guide us in building a society rooted in equality, harmony and unity.
On my return from Himachal Pradesh and Punjab today, a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security discussed the developments in Nepal. The violence in Nepal is heart-rending. I am anguished that many young people have lost their lives. The stability, peace and prosperity of Nepal are of utmost importance to us. I humbly appeal to all my brothers and sisters in Nepal to support peace.
