@mfullard2 I can recommend the Braai Room in Lonehill - a bit of a drive from Killarney. I recently had a lovely Saturday morning breakfast there with a view of the koppie. Maybe the Capetonian in you, could first hike there before tucking in.
South Africa’s Independent Electoral Commission has upheld an objection to stop Jacob Zuma from going to parliament.
This means Jacob Zuma is not allowed to contest in the upcoming South African elections due to a criminal record he acquired after being convicted and jailed for defying a court order to testify at a corruption inquiry.
Zuma was on a parliamentary list submitted by his new political party, uMkhonto we Sizwe known simply as MK.
I am greatly moved by your tweet, son (I can call you that; you’re two years younger than my oldest son). This is the bravest thing any son of an icon can do. Ignore those who are denouncing you. What is more important is your truth and your healing. Many of us need such reckoning with the truth of our past. My father never physically beat up my mother - to my knowledge. But his words were abusive to her most times. I never said or did anything about it. I thought it was normal, it was how real men talked to women. It was the same when I saw Nelson Mandela slap his wife Evelyn in the kitchen in the presence of us kids. Here too I thought it was a normal thing that men should do occasionally - discipline “their” women. It was only on looking back as a young adult that I realized that what I saw growing up had left me traumatized. It was only after I had written about these incidents in my memoirs that I felt the relief, and I came face-to-face with my humanity once again. Like you, I was denounced by those who have placed themselves as gatekeepers of what is or is not African. They can all go fry eggs.
My father @NgugiWaThiongo_ physically abused my late mother – he would beat her up. Some of my earliest memories are me going to visit her at my grandmother’s where she would seek refuge. But with that said it is the silencing of who she was that gets me. Ok- I have said it.
I encountered #EddieWebster as a first year student at #Wits. His Sociology lectures left a lasting impression, as it did on generations of students. After years of #apartheid education, it forced us to critically think. Later as a journalist I valued his insights of our society
"To build institutions and movements, you have to build people, and this is maybe the most radical thing anyone can invest their time in."

#HolocaustMemorialDay
Halle, Magdeburg, Spremberg, Luckenwalde, Eberswalde, Jena, Leipzig, Dresden, Erfurt, Potsdam.

Are you guys journalists or mere observers? Are you filters of truth or enablers of populism? Are you there to question and report with nuance, history & context or your day's job is to let politician speak whatever they want, without pause? Shameful.
Comment: Eish! Once were warriors. Once were exiles in need of documents. Once were young activists fleeing apartheid’s cruel borders and in need of, and finding, succour and kindness. Once were kind and refined activists with hearts and deep solidarity. Once were…
