Just discovered this very nice paper. Table 1 summarizes the challenges of trait ecology.
In my view, the most important ones are: intraspecific variability & relationship with fitness.

Further, I think a lot of trait ecology has an adaptationist bias (ala Ellisabeth A. Lloyd).
