I have a hard time believing Jeremiah Donati brought Kendal Briles to South Carolina for one season without considering what might happen with Shane Beamer. But I also have a hard time believing Briles would have accepted the job unless there was a larger plan. Why would an established offensive coordinator leave TCU to join a head coach already facing enormous pressure unless he had some understanding of what could happen next?
Maybe nothing was guaranteed. Maybe there was no formal promise. But I believe the possibility of Briles becoming the interim head coach had to be discussed. It makes sense for both sides.
Donati gets an experienced coach inside the building who can take over without throwing the program into complete chaos. Briles gets an opportunity that could become much bigger than an offensive coordinator’s job if Beamer is fired. Briles knows the personnel. He knows the staff. The players already know him. The transition could happen immediately.
I cannot prove that was the plan, but this does not feel like a random one-year hire. Maybe Kendal Briles wasn’t brought here only to fix the offense. Maybe he was brought here to be ready for what comes next. #kendalbriles #gamecockfootball
