I feel as if anyone getting involved in a Europe versus the US air conditioning conversation needs to look at this map first (which compares the latitudes of European and American cities).
The discourse on academic political bias focuses a lot on people who are overtly activist, but the problem runs much deeper than that.
I'm often struck by how even smart academics who buy the ideal of value-free science fail to seriously reflect on their own biases.
If you're frustrated with the cost of prescription drugs, please go research PBM's. Absolutely unreal that NY consumers will need to pay $10.18 extra just to cover PBM's share, who already rake in roughly $315B in profit annually.
A bill mandating that pharmacists receive a $10.18 "dispensing fee" for each prescription - which applies to health plans covering smaller employers and individuals - passed the NYS Assembly on the last day of session.
It would add ~$570M per year to drug costs
The suggestion that taking political positions you support is a sign of “real” character has long been a rhetorical maneuver among people who don’t actually care about character or integrity and think politics is everything. I’ve followed this tactic since Clinton, where it was nearly perfected by progressive apologists, but it’s become bipartisan in the Trump era. I think it’s pathetic regardless of the partisan valence.
I’m 46 and have worked in DC for 26 years. During that time, I’ve met and befriended many women in high-level careers. Not one has ever told me she chose her career over marriage. In fact, all of them were trying to find a husband.
The idea that Millennial or Gen X women broadly chose careers over marriage—at least anecdotally—just isn’t true.
A great reminder as we get closer to celebrating America's 250th birthday.
And a warning for whenever the latest calls to end the filibuster - regardless of party, because they both do it- start up again.

Today, the Iranian regime confirmed the death sentence of Sharifeh Mohammadi, a mother, a labor activist, and a defender of women’s rights. Her only act was standing up for justice and dignity. Now she faces execution, leaving behind a young child who may never again feel her embrace. This is not just an attack on one woman, it is an attack on every mother who dares to dream of a better life for her children. When injustice threatens the most vulnerable among us, our silence becomes consent. We must raise our voices for Sharifeh, because her fight is the fight of us all.

.@AmericanAir will never misses an opportunity to remind me why I rarely fly American Airlines. And at this point - it’s my last. Because this *just might* be the worst one.
Horrible news today of yet more instances of political violence with the shooting of Minnesota State Rep. Melissa Hortman and State Senator John Hoffman. There can be no tolerance of political violence and it must be stopped. Join me in praying for their families.
I am heartbroken and horrified by the tragic loss of Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, who were taken from us in an act of violence.
Melissa was a good friend and we started in politics at the same time and were always there for each other. She was a true public servant to the core, dedicating her life to serving Minnesotans with integrity and compassion. Melissa’s legacy will endure, but today we grieve deeply. John’s and my prayers are with their children, their loved ones, and all who are mourning this devastating loss.
“I do so dearly believe that no half-heartedness and no worldly fear must turn us aside from following the light unflinchingly.”
What we do next defines us more than this horrible act of violence and tragedy.
Today began with the cold-blooded assassination of Minnesota Democratic lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark in their home by a coward dressed up as a police officer leaving two children without either parent. Another couple, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, are fighting for their lives.
My fellow Americans, peace is our only way forward.
At this moment may we pause and hold this family, their extended family, and their friends in a collective embrace. No doubt other lawmakers around our country are terrified and with good reason. Everyone is terrified. My hope is that those who protest today will do so peacefully and calmly. My hope is that we will all condemn political violence, hate speech, name calling—all of it. It has no place in our public square, no place in our culture. Condemn it in every way. My hope is that today we will all stop and realize that the tempers, the rage, the anger, the vitriol—it’s all brought us to this moment. This moment must end. This moment cannot go on. No one is safe in this moment. May we hold these families close. May we hold our own families close.
The St. Louis Cardinals (32-24), the most surprising team in baseball, win again, 6-4 over Baltimore.
They have now won 18 of their last 23 games and are tied with the Padres for 2nd place in the NL wild card race.
Otega Oweh announces on Instagram his return to UK with this hype video:
“This year has succeeded all my expectations. Through all the highs and the lows, I’ve found a family in Kentucky forever. So let’s run it back. I’m staying home.”
1316 days since the Taliban banned teenage girls from school. And 856 days since they barred women from university.
With every passing day, millions of women & girls in Afghanistan are lost — to poverty, violence, and extremism.
And we are letting it happen.
