Buildings in my landlord’s portfolio are currently experiencing raw sewage leaking into their basement for days with no response from management & many are without heat/water/electricity. On top of other repairs going unanswered. THIS is what Mamdani seeks to address.
Mamdani is promising a rent freeze on *rent stabilized* buildings, most of which have been bought up by massive property companies that make millions to billions taking rent and not doing repairs while (until the 2019 law) deregulating units to turn them into condos.
Mamdani wants to fine landlords who can’t immediately fix “dangerous conditions”, and if the city has to step in and make the repairs, they’ll take over the building if the landlord can’t pay them back.
Except Mamdani is also pushing for a rent freeze, and most landlords rely on rent increases to pay for those repairs.
So if they can’t raise rent and can’t afford to repay the city, they lose their buildings.
That’s how you slowly turn private property into government housing.
