I can’t overstate how happy I am for the Hugging Face team.

Like always, it’s not their first try. @julien_c started several startups before this amazing success. Same with @ClementDelangue , and with many of the early Hugging Face employees I worked with in the past like @jeffboudier . And Hugging Face was born out of a courageous pivot from a chat app, that was too early.

I want to share another story. I remember a debate with Julien annd Clem about brands. I told him you can’t build a brand that everyone loves, you need to be opiniated and choose who you built for. He gave the example of IKEA. I’ve always had mixed feelings about IKEA — I hate spending my afternoons there. But given the reaction online today, it seems the Hugging Face team really did build a brand we all love 💛. And this is what you need for an open source community.

Lastly, it’s great for open source, great for AI, and great for the Paris ecosystem where the hugging face HQ is. French politicians should celebrate this 100x more.

Let’s celebrate amazing entrepreneurs. Congrats Julien Clem and @Thom_Wolf

Here is a more personal take:

AI is at an inflection point. Open source AI can become less relevant in the coming years if the big closed labs run away with it, OR it can become the foundational fabric of the next phase of human civilization.

Those are vastly different outcomes, and we need the critical mass to ensure we give our collective best shot to the second outcome. Given @JensenHuang's stance on open source AI and how he stepped up to defend it when it was under threat earlier in the summer, NVIDIA was the only partner we truly considered.

HF will remain an independently run, neutral platform.

This gives fuel to our long-term vision and mission of unlocking the community's progress to ensure that AI, which is the greatest breakthrough of our lifetime, is accessible to as many people as possible.

Super happy to share our intention to join forces with NVIDIA in a $12,930,300,000 acquisition 💛💚

10 years after starting Hugging Face, open-source AI is at an inflection point. Thanks to the community, we’ve shown that it can be a complement, and even an alternative, to closed-source APIs. But for it to happen at larger scale, it needs more compute, more support, more collaboration and more visibility. That’s why we went to talk to Jensen, who offered to do exactly that with us.

In addition to doubling down on NVIDIA’s massive contributions to open-source AI (I called them the “King of American open-source AI” earlier this year), they’ve committed to strongly supporting Hugging Face and our mission while keeping the platform open, independent and compute agnostic. The founders and the team are all staying to keep pushing this mission forward.

Together, we think we can make open source the default way to build AI, with the goal of empowering 100 million AI builders to own their intelligence rather than rent it.

It's not time to slow down but to accelerate!

The recent AI-powered cyberattacks have everyone talking about the risks of AI. We should. But let's not lose sight of the bigger picture!

If we work hard at it, AI will make the world safer, not less safe, just as most major technologies have.

We've already seen a glimpse of that: we defended ourselves with AI (more specifically an open model). The same systems that helped stop an AI-powered cyberattack can now help defend against millions of cyberattacks every day, while helping us identify and fix vulnerabilities before attackers exploit them.

To get there, we need three things in my opinion:

- Increase transparency with mandatory trace sharing and incident disclosure for agent cyber-attacks
- Keep AI-powered cyberattacks illegal, with meaningful penalties to disincentivize them
- Equip defenders with the best AI, especially open models, to reduce the asymmetry of capabilities between attackers and defenders

If we get those three things right, AI won't just create new cybersecurity challenges, it will make cybersecurity fundamentally and meaningfully stronger.

And that's before considering AI's impact on science, healthcare, education, productivity, and much more.

• Radical transparency: let’s release the traces from the “rogue” agents so the entire research community can study what happened.

• More capabilities for defenders: let’s commit $100M in compute from OAI to help the Hugging Face community build powerful cyber defenses with the best open and closed models.

The first autonomous agent cyberattack is an unprecedented event. It deserves an unprecedented response!
