I want to appreciate Dr. Osuji my colleague, who came to assist me in doing some of the 65 free Adenotonsillectomy surgeries.
Also I seize this opportunity to appreciate the senior Anesthetist, Dr. Obietan that came to Anesthetize today. I also want to appreciate the scrub nurse, circulating nurse, the anesthetic technician and the cleaner who made sure the theatre was clean during the surgeries today. I know I can’t pay you but Nigerians deeply appreciate and love you, most especially the parents of the children who were operated on.

✝️ WHEN THE CHURCH RECOVERS ITS MORAL VOICE

To describe every religious leader who speaks uncomfortable truth to power as an opposition politician is to misunderstand the public responsibility of the Church.

The Church is not called to contest for political office. Neither is it called to remain silent while citizens suffer, institutions weaken and leadership loses touch with the people.

In KKP Sunday Reflections - Edition 004, When a Nation’s Conscience Is Troubled, I wrote:

“I believe the hour has come for the Church in Nigeria to recover its moral voice.

Not the voice of political partisanship. Not the voice of anger, bitterness or condemnation. Not a voice that becomes loud when political opponents are in power and quiet when friends and preferred leaders commit similar wrongs.

But a voice grounded in Scripture, shaped by the character of Christ and expressed with courage, compassion, humility and consistency.”

The Church must never become an appendage of any political party. But neither should it surrender truth for access, moral independence for political favour or spiritual authority for proximity to power.

When bishops speak about hunger, insecurity, injustice, weak institutions or the suffering of citizens, the proper response is not to label them partisan. It is to engage the substance of what they have said.

And as we reflected in today’s Edition 006, Do Not Let Hardship Harden Your Heart, prolonged hardship tests not only the hearts of citizens, but also the hearts of leaders.

Citizens may be hardened into bitterness and contempt. Leaders may be hardened into denial, defensiveness and distance from those carrying the burden.

All these attacks against Cardinal are plain nonsense. Cardinal is the most credible and respected Christian leader in Nigeria. His courage, truthfulness and honesty are without comparison. I know him closely.

The outrage is because he did not say “Well, insecurity is not Tinubu’s fault, Poverty is not Tinubu’s fault. Let us keep praying to God for help”.

Honouring Two Extraordinary Nigerians: Charly Boy and Newton Jibunoh

Yesterday, July 31, I attended the launch of 999: The Memoir of Charly Boy in Lagos.

Charly Boy is one of those people many may easily dismiss because of his appearance or the public persona he projects. But beyond that is Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa, a thoughtful intellectual, a compassionate human being, and a patriot deeply committed to building a better society for all.

What particularly inspired me was the work he is doing through his foundation to promote men’s health. Having survived prostate cancer himself, he has chosen to transform his personal experience into a campaign for awareness, early detection, and improved access to treatment. Good health remains one of the most critical foundations of a productive and progressive society, and I am committed to supporting this noble cause.

Today, August 1st, I visited the newly established Newton Jibunoh Centre and Museum in Asaba, the brainchild of Newton Jibunoh. Although I was unable to attend his Mandela Day event, themed “Poverty and Inequality Are in Our Hands,” I considered it important to pay him a visit.

My dear Father, Newton Jibunoh, remains one of Nigeria’s living icons. He is a man whose stories, experiences, and wisdom can keep you listening for hours without fatigue. His remarkable road expeditions across the Sahara Desert to London, beginning in 1967 and repeated in 2000, 2008, and subsequent years, are enduring testimonies to courage, resilience, determination, and an adventurous spirit.

His extraordinary journeys also remind us of a period when travelling across Nigeria and beyond was far safer than it is today. Listening to him always leaves me reflecting on how much we have lost as a nation and how much work still lies ahead if we are to rebuild a secure, united, and prosperous Nigeria.
