Academic science has a set of unwritten rules for success. In an effort to level the playing field, particularly for URM trainees, let’s make a list of the unwritten rules in science.
What are some unwritten rules you learned during each stage of your academic career?
You are not an imposter.
You did not make it this far by mere coincidence.
It took hard work, grit and perseverance.
You had to pass many hurdles to prove yourself.
You belong.
Remember this the next time you start doubting yourself.
#Mentoring is not about creating mini versions of ourselves. It’s about empowering our students to be independent thinkers & to be proud of their unique voices. It’s also about having faith in our students & having their back in times of difficulty & self-doubt.
