The successful completion of BlockTrain 2025, conducted with the support of Indian Railways, marks a ground breaking achievement.
This initiative stands as Asia's first hackathon on a moving train, a milestone in merging technological innovation with India's pioneering railway infrastructure.
The special service carried nearly 100 participants- including developers, mentors, and creators- onboard the Duronto Express, traveling from Bengaluru to New Delhi and fostering collaboration and innovation throughout the journey.
@devfolio
Joined Blocktrain this weekend - a hackathon on a moving train!
As someone who hosts a large IRL event myself (read: @IBWofficial), I was super curious how this would be pulled off.
~70–80 people
36 hours: 1 day, 2 nights
Here’s how the @Devfolio team made it work:
> Since a group kickoff inside the train wasn’t feasible, they did it at a PVR theatre before departure. That’s a first for me too. And tbh it worked really well.
> Booking out an entire compartment isn’t easy, some Tatkal seats can’t be reserved in advance. The team did a great job reassigning those to nearby seats and keeping everyone together.
> Everything had a backup plan in place
> Local server to access files + wifi was also magically setup
> All devices combined couldn’t exceed a certain power limit, so the team had to plan accordingly
> In-house doctor and cleaning staff
> Food planning across train stops
> Branding across the train, banners thoughtfully placed
> Thoughtful merch: lap stands (no tables in trains), dental kits, hand sanitizers, sleep masks, more
> Cold brew, music, even a DJ set the vibe
> They even made multiple train trips to Delhi beforehand to map out logistics
> Took inspiration from @jagritiyatra (a 15-day train journey that exposes young entrepreneurs to real-world innovation across India), and had couple of folks from that community onboard.
> Hackers, mentors, and creators - the mix worked.
And many hackers were repeat participants, which says a lot. Hackathons are definitely a strong way to onboard new devs into web3.
Shoutout to @denverjude and the @devfolio team for pulling this off. Innovative, bold, and incredibly well-executed. Not easy at all.
Lucky to have seen it from the inside.
33 hrs.
bangalore → delhi. approx 2,100 km.
no sleep, pure grind. wifi dropped multiple times, builds failed pre-demo, still hacking on a moving train was a wild ride, learned how to stay resourceful under pressure.
