Power Belongs To The People Not Those in Power

Nigeria has about 400,000 police officers and roughly 300,000 military personnel. The rest of the security agencies combined are estimated to be less than 200,000. Altogether, they are not even up to one million personnel serving a population of about 230 million people.

What Nigerians often mistake for power is merely a show of force. Whenever there is a protest in one location, security personnel are drafted from other areas and concentrated there to create the illusion of overwhelming strength.

If serious protests erupted simultaneously across all 36 states and the FCT, the security forces would be stretched beyond their limits. No security structure can effectively contain tens of millions of determined citizens acting with one purpose.

The real problem is not the strength of the government; it is the weakness of the people.

The day Nigerians stop allowing themselves to be manipulated by ethnic and religious sentiments and unite around competence, justice, and good governance, politicians will realize that power truly belongs to the people. Until then, the cycle of suffering, excuses, and division will continue.
