ELECTIONS DURING WARS
Very few democracies have ever been involved in such a major war as Ukraine in the Russia-Ukraine war. In most cases, the countries in question postponed the elections until the end of the war. Ukraine follows the historical precedent.
The most obvious examples are UK during World Wars I and II. In each case elections were postponed. During WWII, the elections were postponed, by parliament's decision, every year since 1940 until 1945. The parliament sat for 10 years, 1935-45.
During WWI, the gap in UK was 1910-18. In France, the gap was shorter, 1914-19, but there were no elections during the war. In WWII, France and smaller democracies were defeated so fast, that there were no question of elections.
The famous example of elections held during the active warfare is the 1864 elections in the US, during the Civil War. On the territories that were not controlled by the Union, votes were not counted, which makes its relevant example for Ukraine 2024.
Note that the incumbent President Lincoln defeated an opponent, a general that he previously dismissed from command, with 55% of the vote. (The electoral college advantage was larger.) Just to have a perspective on a popularity of the war-time leader.
In 1944, the US had presidential elections in the middle of the war, but there was no warfare on America soil. The incumbent President Roosevelt defeated his opponent with 56% of the vote. Again, the electoral college advantage was larger, yet again note the popularity of Dr. Win-the-War.
Summing up, postponing the presidential and parliamentary elections until the end of the war Ukrainian government acts broadly in accord with historical precedent. President @ZelenskyyUa is as legitimate as Prime-ministers Asquith, Lloyd George, and Churchill. And more popular than Presidents Lincoln and Roosevelt during their war-time re-election.
