@Butterflylamb13 Also the singles released would usually be sold separately in the run up to the album relwase as well so you could also buy just that song, sometimes it would have a second song or a remix or two on it as well. The singles you would usually hear on radio or MTV.
@Butterflylamb13 My dad told me in the 60s they used to have listening booths you could play an album in in the shop, by the time I was born though you just bought the album based on the singles that used to come out before it - that was until about 2009ish when Spotify came out
