In fact, one could argue they’re essential. People who don’t have this phase never become normal adults (ever meet a college republican?).

The difference is, Americans do this from age 13-22, once college is over they get a job and move on.

That’s why we all quietly cringe when you meet someone rebelling in their late 20s or 30s (you find them in Brooklyn…).

Muslim kids end up doing this rebellion from ages 22-30 (when they finally leave home) which is very inelegant.
