For the record ๐
President Donald Trumpโs renewed push to revive the Keystone XL pipeline underscores his administrationโs complicated relationship with Canada. While the U.S. depends on Canadian resourcesโparticularly sour crude oil for its aging refinery infrastructureโTrumpโs approach has been marked by a dismissive attitude toward Canada and its citizens. His insistence on Keystone, coupled with threats of tariffs, paints a picture of a leader who views Canadians as subservient partners rather than equals.
Canada should be one of the wealthiest countries in the world. But decades of mismanagement and short sighted policies have its standard of living declining. Trumps actions are a clarion call, and Canada has woken up. Eliminate interprovincial trade barriers, build pipelines, build refineries, diversify the client base, make Canada attractive for capital , and deregulation. But the actions of the Trump administration and its lack of respect, a term President Trump uses often will not be forgotten.
Canada possesses significant untapped natural resources, including hydroelectric power, natural gas, oil, uranium, and critical minerals like rare earths. These resources are vital not only for energy security but also for emerging industries such as artificial intelligence and clean technology. Yet, despite this wealth, Trumpโs administration has chosen to rip up trade agreements it negotiated itself, imposing tariffs on Canadian goods while simultaneously demanding cooperation on projects like Keystone XL. This contradictory approach highlights a lack of respect for Canadaโs sovereignty and economic contributions.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently emphasized during his confirmation hearings that cheap energy is critical for the U.S. to remain competitive in the global AI race against China. Canada is uniquely positioned to meet this need, but Trumpโs antagonistic policies risk pushing Canada to diversify its trade relationships and reduce reliance on the U.S. altogether. Adding to the irony is the fact that when Canadian oil exports are factored in, the U.S. enjoys a trade surplus with Canadaโyet Trumpโs cabinet continues to treat Canadians as expendable.
The dismissive tone from Trumpโs administration is not lost on Canadians. Musk lack of action who has deep ties with Canada is truly disappointing but not a surprise, as other prominent Canadians who have positions of influence in the US also sit silent, abandoning their mother country in it time of need.
His cabinetโs actions appear to assume that Canadians will simply comply without resistance, but this miscalculation could have long-term consequences. The next time the U.S. faces a crisis requiring Canadian cooperation, it may find a less willing partner. Trumpโs personal grievances with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberal government seem to be driving policies that alienate not just politicians but also average Canadians. In doing so, he inadvertently strengthens Trudeauโs and the Liberals position domesticallyโa strategic blunder that game theorists call a โdominated strategyโ.
Canada will adjust to these challenges, absorb the economic pain, and move forward with greater independence. But one thing is certain: Canadians will not forget how they were treated by an administration that prioritized short-term gains over long-term partnership.
I had no idea the line "letting your freak flag fly" comes from Cosby Stills Nash and Young's "Deja Vu" album. Just caught it out of the corner of my ear.
Irony is 35 well heeled uber pensioned Tory MPs who love to complain about โpowerful elitesโ signing a secret letter triggering a secret vote in caucus to throw out a leader who was chosen in a free vote by over 100 thousand party members #CdnPoli#EliteMuch
