Construction is underway for the world's largest football stadium in Casablanca, Morocco 🇲🇦

The Grand Stade Hassan II, with a planned capacity of 115,000 seats, is being built for Morocco's co-hosting of the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Portugal and Spain.

WE, the more than 400 delegates, comprised of farmers, youth, women, entrepreneurs, researchers, CSOs, and policy actors, attending the Tripartite Event on African Agroecological Entrepreneurship, the Harare Seed and Food Festival, and the 5th Biennial Food System Celebration held in Harare, Zimbabwe from 11th to 14th September 2024, under the theme ‘Celebrating Our Healthy African Food Heritage’, hereby make this ‘Harare Declaration of Commitment and Call to Action’ for advancing agroecology and agroecological entrepreneurship in Africa.

The Harare Declaration: Advancing Agroecology and Territorial Markets for Africa's Future

As AFSA’s trailblazing Tripartite event concludes in Harare, Zimbabwe, we reflect on four days of impactful discussions, dynamic collaborations, and powerful commitments. Over 400 delegates—farmers, youth, women, entrepreneurs, researchers, civil society organizations, and policymakers—came together to celebrate Africa’s rich food heritage and chart a path forward for sustainable agriculture through agroecology and territorial markets.

Today, we proudly present the Harare Declaration of Commitment and Call to Action, a unified pledge to build resilient food systems across Africa through agroecological practices and territorial markets.

Key Highlights of the Declaration:

Agroecology for Food Sovereignty: Industrial agriculture has failed to secure food and nutrition security while posing serious risks to human and environmental health. Agroecology offers a sustainable and culturally rooted alternative, ensuring the health of our soils, biodiversity, and social relationships.

Empowering Agroecological Entrepreneurs: Agroecological entrepreneurship is crucial for the exchange of seeds and food across borders, supporting the growth of territorial markets that are critical for Africa's food sovereignty. These markets strengthen local economies, foster regional trade, and ensure access to healthy, agroecologically produced food. Yet, financial access remains a significant hurdle. More resources must be directed towards empowering agroecological entrepreneurs to thrive.

Territorial Markets at the Heart of Our Future: Territorial markets are the backbone of local economies, rooted in community values and traditional knowledge. By strengthening these markets, we preserve our food heritage, support sustainable practices, and ensure economic resilience. The declaration emphasizes the need to develop territorial markers and standards for agroecologically produced foods, recognized across national borders.

Honoring Our Food Heritage: Our food is more than just nourishment—it’s a reflection of our culture, history, and connection to the land. Embracing traditional food systems not only preserves this heritage but also provides a sustainable way forward in the face of global challenges.

Our Commitment: As delegates, we pledge to work together within AFSA’s framework to tackle the challenges facing our food systems. This includes promoting agroecological practices, strengthening networks of farmers and entrepreneurs, and supporting territorial markets across Africa and globally.

As we wrap up this transformative event, let’s continue to work together to strengthen territorial markets and agroecological entrepreneurship. Africa’s future in food systems is bright, sustainable, and rooted in our ancestral wisdom.
