Let’s talk Malik Basintale.

1. I have been thinking of writing this post for a while. I haven’t found the right time to do so. It’s been a busy few weeks. But yesterday’s events at PAC and the comments by the Chair has precipitated it. Because it is precisely everything i recommend against.

2. Now, i know that for non deep thinkers, this might be taken as a controversial take. But when have I ever not tried to think outside, in fact against, the box.?

3. I think that Malik Basintale’s appointment as a bureaucrat was perhaps one of the least strategic decisions the NDC has ever made.

4. It doesn’t matter where anyone sits, we can all agree that Malik has been a revelation. Particularly in the run in towards the election. Great street credibility with mobilising enthusiasm.

5. The challenge with most political parties is that as soon as they get into government, they begin to crumble into managerial and bureaucratic speak. They begin to see the tsooboi as the task of opposition candidates. They start to think facts and figures only is what drives credibility. No! It never has.

6. Absolutely not. Politics is emotions. Emotional connection and constant high energy engagement.
Government must never step off the ladder of massive civic mobilisation. You must continue to rally the base; and lead marches, clean up exercises, rallies and jama singing.

7. Malik should have been kept outside Goverment. His full time job should have been deploying him accross the country to continue to rally young people behind the government and government policies. He should have been supported and resourced to continue to rally up the base. 24/7.

8. That’s how you build a mass political party! You dont let up; or lull for a moment.

9. Now, it is true that in the process, Malik would have been built a massive national profile. He would become extremely popular. Jerry Rawlings esque almost. For me, that’s the exciting. I know for some people, that wouldd be threating to their personal political ambitions

10. But think about it. A barely 30 year old young man supported to build massive massive enthusiasm for the party is a long term win. So it allows it build a platform for presidency? And so what?

11. Unfortunately, the NDC has taken its foot off the pedal. Its massive mobilisation infrastructure is now demobilised. Young men line up their party offices with half literate half formatted CVs, they will never get.

12. Malik sits in Accra sorting between Zoomlion contracts and per diem allowances. His true talent wasted; shelved to be deployed just a few months to elections. When it is too late.

13. See what Dr Frank Amoakohene is doing in Ashanti? That’s the energy (x 16) you need to maintain generational enthusiasm.

14. This is why Nkrumah was different. The CPP never stopped mobilising. They defined high energy politics.

15. This is why they won elections by a landslide always.

16. Get Malik out to the streets; give him a budget to mobilize the base 24/7.

17. You are free to disagree. New and brave ideas only appeal when you are in opposition, not in Government anyway!

18. If you learn nothing at all, and if you take nothing From me at all. Take this from one of the Greats: ACTIVATE ALL BODY CAMERAS ALWAYS!
