@CartyRubble@antpeople@officialcharts I’m not sure if my old Guinness Book of Hit Singles books use release date or date charted, always assumed it was release date, but they probably use the date the songs charted.
@antpeople@officialcharts@CartyRubble 2/ The next day, Charlene is announced as new no. 1 for week ending June 20th… so her song is given as being the no. 1 when William was born. There are loads of people born on a Monday pre-1987 who probably have two options for “birthday number one”!
@antpeople@officialcharts@CartyRubble 1/ This reminds me of the Prince William / Goody Two Shoes problem! He was born Monday 21 June. If you’d asked anyone that day “What’s number 1?” they’d have said Goody Two Shoes.
@antpeople Also, always loved his quote here about the PC image, and feeling like "a prat" etc. Makes sense as the hair / make-up were somewhat toned down for the Ant Rap video. But it's become such an iconic 80s image, all these years later, so I wonder how Adam reflects on it now.
@antpeople It's crazy that Adam only ever got two Smash Hits front covers. In all fairness, their covers were incredibly diverse back then, and featured many lesser known acts, but even so...! And Haircut 100, Japan and OMD had more covers. (PS - Adam had 12 Look-In covers in same era!)
@antpeople Adam mentioned in his book that the video for this is “loosely based on the Adam Ant story”. With this in mind, parts of the video make sense… and I’ve convinced myself that the ginger-haired girl (who gets her “just desserts” at the end) represents Malcolm McLaren…!
@antpeople What a strange review! How can it be both “safe and predictable” and also “a far cry” from previous hits?! Anyway, I’d say that objectively this is one of the least “safe” number ones ever!
@antpeople Great article… if Decca had played fair maybe Adam would have let them cash in a few years later. Most tracks came out in some official form anyway. Of the four left, would love to hear what Marco would have done with Song for Ruth Ellis.
@maggiephilbin@antpeople@adamaofficial This report of yours is absolutely my favourite Ant TV appearance ever! I’ve re-watched it countless times over the years… thank you for making it!! 😀
@antpeople@maggiephilbin@adamaofficial Love this! What strikes me the most is how happy and relaxed Adam looks here…! He’s at the peak of his popularity, but given his workaholic-ness, the pressure he felt could have been immense at this point. The informal nature of this piece is a lovely snapshot of this moment.
@antpeople And I'll just add... being in the queue was so amazing too! Got there around 4pm, and spotted an already-sizeable cool-looking crowd from across Sheps Bush Green...! Was the first Ant gig for loads of us I guess, so the excitement was off the scale! :D
