Jim Ross addressed WWE’s reported soft ticket sales for the two-night SummerSlam in Minnesota on Grilling JR, where co-host Conrad Thompson noted around 22,000 tickets sold against roughly 50,000 at last year’s show. Ross pointed to one missing ingredient: “WWE doesn’t have any one wrestler that’s just quite hot. You got to have somebody hot, somebody that people are talking about, and they don’t have that right now. They got a lot of great talents. It’s always been a matter of how they’re utilized.”
On Cody Rhodes, Roman Reigns, and CM Punk sharing the top spot: “I don’t feel that they have anybody hot or close to being hot on that national or international level. Somebody has got to catch on fire. You can’t be hot this week on TV and disappear next week. There’s got to be some consistency.”
Ross put the blame on the writing: “It’s a creative issue. The creative drives the ship. It takes a team effort to screw things up. I think WWE got a little complacent, and they started repeating themselves.”
He also questioned the heel side of the roster: “You got to have a great heel to play off of. It doesn’t seem to me that any heel on that roster is a big part of the story. You got to have stars to make stars.” Asked which of the top three fits that role, Ross picked Punk: “more naturally suited to be a heel.”
