My thoughts on the Leafs loss to the Boston Bruins:

There’s no denying Toronto had horrible luck with injuries this series. Critical injuries have haunted us in the first round of the playoffs all too often - losing Jake Muzzin, Tavares with the brutal concussion, and this year it was Nylander, Matthews, and Woll. It’s been a lot tougher to take these L’s with so many what-ifs.

Toronto came back from a 3-1 deficit without Matthews though, and played the most physical hockey we’ve seen them play in years. Despite losing tonight’s game, they proved many people wrong just by pushing this series to a Game 7 overtime there’s a lot to appreciate about what we saw - especially from guys like Knies and Woll.

None of this - and I mean none of this - changes the fact that it’s time for drastic change to the makeup of this roster.

We witnessed the end of an era tonight.

To the fans who claim to be done, I can assure you, next year’s team will look very, very different, and you’ll be back “in” by September - if not by next week.

Go easy on the boys tonight - even the ones you’re particularly upset with. The pain they feel far exceeds your own.

Lastly, respect to the Boston Bruins. They’ve found a way to turn over their championship roster without sacrificing contention for the Atlantic and they’ve got our number. When you compare our rosters on paper - particularly star power - you’d think Toronto would have the edge, but Boston is built from the back out and it really helps them stay true to their structure. The Bruins were the better team tonight. They deserved to win. Our breakouts were so bad we were throwing away defensive zone draw wins like I’ve never seen. I felt like we were relying on a puncher’s chance toward the end of that game - just wish we coulda caught the Bruins on the chin.

Expecting some big announcements from the organization in the coming weeks.
