My favorite line from any Founding Father.
250 years ago, John Adams described exactly how we would be celebrating the Fourth of July today. He got every bit of it right.
"It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more."
She's been called the most beautiful ship in the world, and today, the Amerigo Vespucci sails into New York Harbor for our nation's 250th birthday. Named for the Italian explorer who gave America its name, she belongs right here. Happy Fourth of July to all! 🇺🇸🇮🇹 #America250
I was born in Germany, I grew up in Spain, I’ve lived in the US for 15 years, and I’ve been a US citizen for about a year.
I never really understood patriotism until I became American.
Usually, when people move to other countries they are expats. A German in Spain for example. When people move to America they become American.
It’s the greatest country on earth and an experiment worth fighting for.
Happy 4th of July. 🎆
John Quincy Adams, when he discovered that both his father, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson had died on the 50th anniversary of independence on July 4, 1826, he believed it to be a palpable mark of divine grace.
“The time, the manner, the coincidence with the decease of Jefferson, are visible and palpable marks of divine favour, for which I would humble myself in grateful and silent adoration before the Ruler of the Universe—For myself all that I dare to ask is that I may live the remnant of my days in a manner worthy of him.”
Independence has been declared, the population is learning about the document, but there is a general sense of: “now, what shall we do?”
It is true that the United Colonies or United States or whatever this nation is called is unilaterally independent, but her parent nation shall not release her easily.
The Declaration of Independence is signed - but the battle has only just begun.
Signing the Declaration of Independence was an act of treason against the British Crown, punishable by death.
Benjamin Rush said signing felt like writing his own death warrant.
56 men did it anyway. 250 years later, their courage is why we're still here. Honor it today. 🇺🇸
@NYCMayor Nobody pretends it’s without flaws, but you seem to focus on that… You’re a phony piece of garbage… You’re doing damage control now because you’re so angry and bitter
