โThey said, โGive us a king to lead us,โ this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. And the Lord told him: 'Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.'โ 1 Samuel 8:6-7
In reality the decision is never if but rather who will be your king. As Dylan sings, โYou gotta serve somebody.โ We are all sheep in need of a good king who will love, defend, care for, and lead us. So carefully โchoose this day whom you will serve.โ (Joshua 24:15)
โWhen I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.โ (1 Corinthians 13:1) 3of3
Oftentimes we unconsciously carry these stories with us into adulthood. The problem is what helped us survive or even thrive in childhood doesnโt serve us so well in adulthood. 2of3
When you look back on your childhood what do you remember? Do you have fond memories, painful ones, or both? Do you minimize painful memories? As children we create stories to make sense of ourselves and the world we live in. 1of3
However, we must first value our hearts enough to admit our neediness. After this, we honor God and the way he has made us by humbly bringing our needs to him so he can meet them. 2of3
We all have needs. We need friendships, work, provision, creative solutions, and support. Do you ever think your needs are in short supply? Philippians 4:19 promises the Creator of the Universe is our source of infinite supply. 1of3
If we desire deep healing we must investigate and challenge these stories. We must ask God to help us re-narrate (not the facts) but the truth of our stories and his presence with us in those stories. 2of3
We have all experienced wounds from within our family of origin. These wounds shape the way we relate to ourselves, God, and others. They shape the stories we tell ourselves about the way the world works. 1of3
