Vanessa Kentfield, of Manor Park, Lewisham, has been banned from keeping animals after her three-year-old bull-breed dog, 𝗥𝘂𝗯𝗶𝗰, starved to death.

When Rubic died, he weighed just 𝟮𝟭𝗸𝗴 — less than half the expected weight for a healthy dog of his type.

Vets described him as 𝘀𝗸𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗹, with every bone visible and a body condition score of just 𝟭/𝟱.

This was not a sudden deterioration.

Rubic had already been seen by vets in August 2024 in a severely underweight condition and with a neck wound.

Kentfield said he had been staying with a friend. She then failed to attend follow-up appointments and did not return with him for more than a year.

When she finally brought Rubic back, it was with his 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆.

The veterinary findings were horrific: prolonged and severe starvation, pressure sores consistent with lying on hard surfaces and massively overgrown nails indicating prolonged inactivity.

Most disturbingly, Kentfield had access to 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗣𝗗𝗦𝗔 veterinary care.

Yet at Bromley Magistrates’ Court, she received a 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 £𝟯𝟬𝟬 and an animal ban.

No immediate custodial sentence. No community order.

The ban can also be appealed after five years.

Rubic was only three years old.

His death followed what vets described as prolonged suffering — suffering that could potentially have been prevented.

The case also raises wider questions about how animal cruelty cases are dealt with when the consequences for the victim are so severe.

𝗥𝘂𝗯𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲.

He needed someone to speak for him.
