Students go abroad purely by personal choice and for personal gain, not as part of any national duty or service to India.

If they are capable of leaving the country on their own terms, they are equally capable of returning on their own. Emergency evacuation is justified only when a conflict erupts suddenly and all exit routes are cut off. But when war clouds are gathering, transport is available, and the embassy repeatedly issues clear advisories to leave, and those advisories are ignored in the hope of a free, state-funded return, the responsibility lies squarely with the individuals, not the GoI.

The GoI should therefore stop rescuing those who wilfully ignore official advisories, because doing otherwise only entrenches entitlement and guarantees the same recklessness in future crises.

Months before that, Bangladeshi border patrol crossed into Indian territory and threatened locals over the construction of a temple.

And yet, we continue to extend aid, emergency assistance, and lines of credit to Bangladesh. We play cricket with them, host their players in our leagues, train their officers in our military academies, and educate their students in our colleges.

If this is not strategic generosity turning into strategic self-delusion, what is? We keep telling ourselves that restraint is strength. It isn’t. The global order does not respect restraint; it respects power. And we display power only when every other option is exhausted. This pattern is unsustainable. Repeated provocation met with endless accommodation sends one message: there are no consequences. And that is an invitation to more provocation.

But without them? We’d be counting more corpses.

Still think it was a failure? Here’s the story they won’t print.

October 27. Srinagar. Government Medical College.
A regular day. Until someone noticed A JeM poster on a notice board. CCTV rolls. Dr. Adil Ahmad Rather. Inside his hostel locker, Police Found an AK-56.
