If you have a moment this evening , this Trafalgar Day, please drink a toast to the Immortal Memory of Horatio, Viscount Nelson, victor of Trafalgar, Copenhagen and the Nile.
1789-1939, the Church often sided with those who used force to enforce order. Since 1945, force against even unruly civilians is viewed as a violation of their dignity and rights. Now we struggle to say what a state can do to enforce order at all. A new recalibration is needed.
« Il n’y a qu’une fatalité, celle des peuples qui n’ont plus assez de forces pour se tenir debout et qui se couchent pour mourir.
Le destin d’une nation se gagne chaque jour contre les causes internes et externes de destruction. »
@WillRicci You work for the most powerful narrative-shaping institution in politics, and you’re whining about a single candidate's ecosystem of think tanks and donors? Pathetic.
Get it over with and make PD James’ novel real. You’ve already got mass surveillance and a collapsing birthrate, just drop the pretense and appoint someone Warden of England.
BREAKING PM Andy Burnham has announced plans for a new National Centre for Information Defence to improve community cohesion and prevent a "distorted and untrue narrative about Britain".
The new centre will draw up expertise and best practice, and ensure the UK has the defensive capability necessary to combat information warfare and build national resilience.
Mr Burnham said: "There is no national security without a strong, cohesive society. That’s the starting point for everything we hold dear and everything we want to achieve. But the fact is that it has been under attack.
"In recent years we have seen an industrial-scale assault by hostile actors on the information environment in the UK and many of our allies.
"Russian agencies have used every means at their disposal to spread lies and disinformation and prey on people’s fears. They’ve used bots and fake websites. Falsified newspaper articles.
"Forged the branding of 28 British organisations – including universities and the BBC. They’ve amplified far right narratives. And we have evidence that they tried to interfere with the 2019 General Election.
"We also know that they have tried to stoke tensions and unrest in the wake of horrific events. The idea that anyone would try to use such things to their advantage is just repulsive – but it is what they do."

@AmericanReform_@NEMonarchist Why are they obsessed with the idea of Catholic infiltration when half the US Senate has an Israeli flag hung in their office?
A couple of months ago, I read a few pages of Peter Thiel's book Zero to One, and something stuck with me. He talks about how a perfectly competitive market is one you don't want to be in because your efforts are high and your rewards low.
Well, it seems to me that much of the youth's complaints about today's society could be traced back to this dynamic. Damn-near every waking hour is spent competing for something, and often for worse rewards than their parents received.
Got to eat healthy and hit the gym to looksmax, got to jestermax on dating apps, got to go to nice places to improve your social media, got to get an advanced degree and contract debt to have an ok job, got to bring your cognitive A-game to work, got to bring your sexual A-game the first time, got to be funnier than her options, got to manage your sleep and recovery to compete better.
None of this is mandatory, and some of it is not unique to our time, but both the reward for competing well and the penalty for competing badly are greater than ever. So you kind of have to compete.
As Michel Houellebecq famously observed in his 1994 novel Whatever, liberalism is the extension of competition to every domain of life. Infinite optionality means zero loyalty, and zero loyalty means infinite competition.
I suspect that some of the youth's inclination toward socialism is longing for some respite, even as the long-term effect of the remedy might be worse than the disease
Tax the DINKs.
Tax the Funko pops.
Tax the cruises.
Tax the daycares.
Tax every trapping of luxury boomer communism and millennial and genX consumption religion until it's impossible to practice either lifestyle.
Everything is socialism, except for preferential tax treatment for multi-billionaire hedge fund managers and their multi-millionaire clients. That’s capitalism.
"The special trait making me an anarch is that I live in a world which I 'ultimately' do not take seriously. This increases my freedom; I serve as a temporary volunteer."
