THE IDEAL HOMESTEAD

At least 10 hectares (~25 acres) of paddocked pastures for rotational grazing.

Farmhouse big enough for a large family.

A garden/field area of over 1000 square meters (~10,000 square feet), providing enough space to grow large amounts of calorie crops for complete nutritional self-sufficiency.

A huge barn — the bigger, the better.

A large herd of sheep, goats, and/or cattle, with multiple rams/bucks/bulls allowing for multiple bloodlines and the production of your own breeding stock.

An apiary with ~30 beehives.

No dedicated orchard space — trees grow in the paddocks, providing shade for livestock, and fruit and timber for the farmer.

A pond to raise fish and/or waterfowl, and for swimming in the summer.

A wood shed capable of storing at least 25 cubic meters (~7 cords) of firewood.

A treehouse that serves as an observation point and a hunting blind.

A summer kitchen — very useful when cooking with wood.

A smokehouse and an earth cellar, for preserving food without refrigeration.

A team of trained draft animals, such as oxen, horses, or donkeys, for working the land and transporting heavy loads without being dependent on the techno-industrial system.
