IMHO, I think South America has one foot in the West and the other one in the Global South. Or said otherwise, they are the Southern branch of the West: clearly based on European civilization, but with modern society structures that diverge quite a lot from what is now Europe (or US, UK, ANZ).

Another important note: South America is definitely not a monolithic culture. From Guatemala to Uruguay, from Bolivia to the Dominican Republic, the way to see the world and identify as a nation (Western or not) is probably extremely different.

If not Bezos, who else can compete with Musk in building a multi-industry empire? Bezos leveraged the internet to create a real-world giant grounded in logistics, not just software and online advertising. He has now diversified through investments in media (Washington Post, MGM), electric vehicles (Rivian), and space (Blue Origin). Earlier this year, he reportedly considered bidding for TikTok. It seems clear he’s willing to follow Elon’s playbook. I don’t think any other Silicon Valley billionaire is that close.
