Honored to have participated as a Keynote Speaker at the Akwaaba African Travel Market in Lagos, Nigeria.
I shared insights on the power of domestic tourism in Africa—a vital engine for inclusive growth, job creation, cultural preservation, and resilience. Too often overshadowed by international arrivals, domestic tourism is in fact the backbone of our sector, keeping businesses alive year-round and connecting communities across our continent.
Uganda’s experience shows that with the right policies, investments, and community engagement, we can unlock the full potential of homegrown tourism markets. This aligns strongly with Africa’s Agenda 2063 and the shared vision of multiplying tourism’s impact by 2040.
Grateful to Ikechi Uko and the Akwaaba team for bringing together Africa’s tourism family to shape a stronger future for our industry. ✨

I am delighted to be participating in the #DRCTravelMeet 2025, taking place this week in Kinshasa, DRC.
During yesterday’s discussion on “Sustainable and Resilient Tourism: Challenges and Best Practices,” I emphasized that sustainability means managing our natural and cultural heritage not as resources to consume, but as treasures to pass on, intact and enriched to the next generation.
Equally resilience means building the capacity of our sector to absorb shocks, whether from climate change, pandemics, or shifts in global markets without losing momentum.
And the other truth is, tourists don’t think in borders, they think in journeys.
The forests, wildlife and cultures that inspire travel flow across frontiers, which is why our sustainability and resilience strategies must also be regional efforts- harmonized visas, cross-border tourism circuits and joint marketing of shared treasures.
If we promote without protecting, we lose. If we restrict instead of facilitating, we lose. But when sustainability and resilience work hand in hand we all win.
Because in the end:
✅ Promotion fills the seats but sustainability fills the future.
✅ Immigration gets the visitor in but resilience ensures they return.
✅ Every visa stamped should mean livelihoods protected, cultures celebrated and ecosystems preserved.
Looking forward to the continuing discussions and collaborations as #DRCTravelMeet2025 continues here in Kinshasa until August 27.
