I think most Indians are now officially addicted to Instagram.

Across age groups, demographics and economic strata, everybody is mindlessly doomscrolling.

Most are spending their idle time simply flicking their screens and watching some random brain rot.

And to add fuel to this addiction fire, Instagram also behaves like an Akshayapatra, where it keeps serving up the unlimited service of videos and reels, which never stop.

A lot of people ask why so many Indians run abroad the first chance they get? Why some states have temples dedicated to foreign country visas? Why some people are so desperate to get away that they even risk death by drowning or freezing to illegally enter other countries?

Why are Indians so desperate to immigrate?

Because in the countries these people usually move to, they value life. They value people. They value you.

Unfortunately, that particular concept is virtually unheard of in India.

Here, lives are as important as money is to a sacrificial lamb.

Because In India:

The government doesn’t give a damn about you.
The judiciary thinks you don’t even exist.
People, in general, treat others like a piece of crap.
And if you treat someone nicely, chances are they’ll backstab you at the first opportunity.

Most of us have our souls and self-confidence destroyed, respawned, and then destroyed again on a daily basis. We get treated worse than a car in a Rohit Shetty movie.

So why would anyone stay?

In India

A two-bit clerk in an obscure municipal department can make your life miserable.
Any random ticket giver or clerk can abuse you.
A part-time watchman outside a private building treats you like a criminal.
Store workers treat you like a thief.
Everyone treats you like a shirker.

Your life is essentially a never-ending hurdles race that lasts for 70 years, if you make it that far that is.

So why would anyone stay?

In India

You risk your life every single time you step out of the house.
You can die when an illegal concrete slab, which was permitted by a corrupt babu, falls on you.
You can drown in a sewage tunnel because some random bozo has stolen the manhole cover.
You can burn to death in an illegally modified bus that the corrupt RTO has permitted to operate.
You can be run over by a drunken idiot who’s been given a license by that same RTO.
You can be crushed to death in a stampede caused by the incompetence of the police, who can’t handle a crowd.
You can die after consuming poison labelled as medicine because the babu who was supposed to prevent it took a bribe and looked the other way.
You can fall to death from a train because the railway authorities, after taking lakhs of crores in the name of safety, have blown it all away on "other things".

At any point in time, you can get impaled, burned to death, crushed, fall off a cliff, or be killed by a guy with a sword, sometimes all of the above.

Here, life is like the game Prince of Persia, except, unlike in the game, you don’t get three lives, nor can you restart. Once you are dead, you are dead.

So why would anyone stay?

And then comes the worst part.

In India,

Nobody is held accountable.
Nobody faces consequences.
Nobody gets punished.
There’s nobody you can complain to — and where you miraculously can, nobody listens.
People whose incompetence caused your death get promoted.
Some even run important departments that enable them to kill more people.

Every second of your life here is a herculean effort against the system, the process and the people.

However, Hercules had 12 labours in total.

In India, you face 12 labours everyday

So why would anyone stay?

Therefore, when someone actually gets a chance to get out, it shouldn’t be a surprise that they take it with both hands.

P.S.: In the last six months, 22 children died because of fake medicine, 40 people were burned to death in illegally modified buses and 51 people died in stampedes.

Those were 113 easily preventable deaths. Deaths mind you. DEATHS

113 innocent Indian citizens lost their lives.

What happened after that?

How many government officials were arrested? How many were punished? How many were sacked? What were the actions taken? How quickly we forgot everyone?

The answers to these questions will tell you why many people don’t want to stay in India anymore.

Someone on Reddit asked what does Zerodha do differently, how are we profitable, why don't IPO etc. This is what I replied:

Hmmm... so you forget that we have spent 15 years getting here. And maybe another 10 years, before Zerodha, I was involved in the markets in some form. So, 25 years in all. Things in business compound over time, especially if you like or love what you are doing and if you are lucky to be in the right place and time.

When we started Zerodha, we started off as a partnership firm because the exchange deposit requirement was lower, Rs 90 lks compared to Rs 1.5 cr. The start was mainly enabled thanks to the NSE Now trading platform, which came free of cost if you were an NSE broker. For the backoffice piece, sending contract notes, maintaining ledgers, etc., we signed up with a vendor who basically gave it at almost 0 cost. This was provided that we tested out his platform.

So the money we have spent on Zerodha is maybe ~Rs 10lks, and that is all the money that has gone into the business till date. Rs 2.5 lks for our website, Rs 5lks for our office interiors (we had an office before), and Rs 2.5 lks for miscellaneous. So, we came from an extremely middle-class background and had no rich uncles. 😀 Dad was a bank manager, and Mom taught Veena.

Our rise coincides with India's rise. We were present at the right place and time with the right products and initiatives. Any gyan any founder gives, eventually comes down to getting timing right, and this has got everything to do with luck. 😀 I was just reading about Jensen Huang from Nvidia, he survived in the business for 30 years until he hit the right place and time. For a long time, people might have questioned what he was doing until very recently. 😀

Now that there is no pressure to give any exit to any investor, we can continue doing what is right for the customer, sometimes even at the cost of the business. For example, our no spam or no tracking policy. I believe that the philosophy with which we run Zerodha will be our real moat as a business. It is very tough to stick to it as a public company.

Call me harsh, but the PM sitting in a giant boardroom with lots of Bureaucrats trying frame policies to simplify business in India won't work.

Because the set of people he is interacting with don't and is banking to solve these problems, never face any of these difficulties.

So, their definition of easy and difficult is actually very different to what actually is easy and difficult

According to them, getting a certificate notarized, then taking a duplicate, before filling an application form and submitting it at the local office during working hours is easy.

They will say, can't someone do this. Isn't it easy?

Because for them that's how it happens. All decks are cleared for them, so they assume it must be the same for citizens.

But reality is different.

Most of the people in that boardroom have been away from reality longer than Akshay Kumar has had a hit movie.

If you want to change, as a part of the probationary period, make them get one govt certificate, without disclosing they are government employees and without paying a bribe.

Or embed them with a small to medium enterprise to experience their issues hands on.

Only then they can solve the problem of doing business in India.

In the last 8 or 10 years, the only businesses which have managed to raise funds at absurd valuations which are in a different universe from their financials, are the ones who promise shortcuts to Indians

Swiggy and Zomato grew because they promised a shortcut to food.

Zepto grew because they promised Shortcut to Groceries.

Urban company promised a shortcut to barbers, beaticians and AC mechanics.

Byjus, Unacademy and Physicswallah, were all able to scam valuate themselves because they promised parents a shortcut to educational institutes for their kids.

Groww, Upstoxx and other stockbroking apps raised absurd money promising people a shortcut to money

Most companies were able to list ridiculous valuations (Paytm, Ola Electric, Nykaa, Zomato again, Gensol and many others) because they promised a shortcut to become rich.

Parties win elections because they promise people a shortcut to cash

You ask why Indian deeptech is floundering in terms of fund raise and valuation.

It is not because they lack capabilities.

It is because they promise the hard yards.

An officer like B Dayanand, IPS, Bengaluru Police Commissioner, the very embodiment of discipline and dedication, has been suspended for “dereliction of duty”? That's what the Govt order says.

This is the same man who:

- Never took a single leave in 30 years of service.
- Postponed his own engagement because duty called.
- Missed the naming ceremonies of both his sons, choosing uniform over celebration.
- Rarely showed up at family events, yet was always present when the city needed him.

Never bowed to political pressure, never compromised his integrity.

And this is how the state government repays him?

Suspending a man of such integrity not only insults his service and every honest officer.

When sycophants are rewarded and sincere officers are punished, governance becomes a mockery.

This isn’t accountability. This is vendetta against uprightness.

In India, You can Have an ideology, support a political party, believe in policies and ideas, favour a sporting team.

But never ever be a fan. Especially of individuals, be it politicians, sportspersons, actors and Govt servants.

Because Most don't care about you.

Many don't believe in what they say to you. Most don't practice what they preach to you.

For them, You are nothing but a means to an end. And their end is very different from your end.

In that regard

One person will ask you to live, breathe and fight for Kannada. Will ask you to object to milk packets because of Kannada. But will send his kids to Canadian International School and Canada for higher education.

Another one will ask you to die for Tamil. But will send his son to a convent and get him educated in English.

Then there are people who will implore you to get your kids educated in Marathi medium, because you know Marathi Pride and all that. But will send their own to a Scottish school, where the fees is more than your annual salary.

Some will go out of the way to prevent the growth of industries in their state. But will send their daughter to the neighboring state for starting a company.

Some push their state into bankruptcy and starvation, but will send their kids to London where I kid you not, they become Connoisseurs in foods so esoteric that you need a language degree to pronounce their names.

Your transport secretary does not pay the toll he / she levies on you.

Your health secretary goes to London to get himself treated not the local govt hospital.

Your cricket captain doesn't use any of the products he endorses.

Your Head / Tail / Feet / Hand actor asks you to drink Coke and eat Lays, but doesn't have sugar and runs away from chips faster than he runs away from you.

Most ask you to be patriotic and stay back in India. But send most of their kids abroad.

So Never idolize individual people.

Don't listen to them without applying your own brain.

Most will say you are the most important person in their life, but will not hesitate to unleash the police / bodyguards on you.

They will make you wait endlessly in traffic jams so that they travel comfortably. But then they will tell your happiness is their main concern.

They want you to follow what they tell you. But they will never take responsibility for the outcome.

Because They don't make the choices they ask you to make. They don't deal with the fallout like you do.

You are nothing to them as an individual.

For them you just another non playing character in an ocean of non playing characters. Their interest in you is only to the extent of how much they can extract from you.

They don't care you live or die, as long as they keep benefitting off your stupidity.

For the people you blindly follow, they don't even want to know you.

For them You are nothing but a movie extra.

A nicely worded ghostwritten social media post, which they don't even read, forget mean.

And if you die in your attempt to validate your fandom, you become a name on a sheet, whose family has to be given ex-gratia payment to. And most probably they would have to pay a bribe to receive it.

So be smart. Support people by all means. But draw a line.

Don't be a fanatic of anything. It isn't worth it.

You gain nothing from it. But will lose everything because of it.

The only people who love you and care for you are your family. They will be the only ones who will miss you when you die.

They will be the only ones who remember you when you are gone.

Don't believe me, ask the families of people who were killed in Bangalore and Hyderabad.

We, RCB fans, are indebted to CM Siddaramaiah and DCM DK Shivakumar for winning us the IPL after 18 years.

They displayed incredible cricketing and leadership skills on the field and brought our club this long elusive glory.

We are also very upset about Virat Kohli, other players and the RCB Management for poor arrangement of the security measures at the program organised to honour CM & DK and their families for winning us the trophy.

Good that RCB Management is arrested and police commissioner is suspended. They are primarily responsible for security in Bengaluru.

Anyways, CM and DKS can now go back to Chinnaswamy Stadium to start practising for their next IPL season.
